"Extensive pain"
István Aranyosi (Bilkent University)

One of the important insights of the radicalized enactive and embodied approach propounded by Hutto and Myin (2012) involves the observation that instead of viewing mental states as sometimes extended, as champions of the Extended Mind Hypothesis do, we should rather view them as extensive, that is, in a way that makes it the default condition that mental states are partly constituted by extra—cranial facts. In this paper I consider a type of mental state – pain -- that has not yet been the focus of attention for extended mind theorists, yet, I will argue it is a very fitting example for the more radical version of extensive mind that Hutto and Myin champion. My argument will be based on some theoretical and empirical data on both pain embodiment in the Peripheral Nervous System and social modulation of pain experience.
