In a bit to integrate industrial experience as part of coursework, the Department of Civil Engineering, BITS Pilani Dubai Campus conducted a technical site visit to Unger Steel Middle East, Sharjah. Third year civil engineering students, studying the 'Design of Steel Structures' course, were exposed to advanced automated technologies of fabricating members for large scale steel structures.

We thank Gerhard Weber, Nixon Thomas and the entire team of Unger Steel Middle East for greatly conducting this educational experience.

The Department of Civil Engineering, BITS-Pilani, Dubai Campus organized 'Build Your Bridge 2022' on Dec 19th - a one-of-its-kind program in UAE for budding civil engineers from Grades 9 to 12 in schools as an introduction to this diverse field.

Students were not only exposed to the science of building bridges, but were also provided an opportunity to participate in a unique bridge modelling competition. Top two winning teams were awarded a prize and a winner's citation. Additionally, the students were introduced to the basics of computational design of trusses, and the multifaceted scope of civil engineering.

- Modernize the curriculum of our flagship B.E., M.E. and PhD programs in Civil Engineering, in-line with the latest industry trends

An insightful talk on 'Structural Systems in Tall Buildings' was conducted by Er. Hemant Gor, CEng MIStructE, Sr. Civil & Structural Engineer, Abu Dhabi on 25-Oct-2022 at BITS Pilani Dubai Campus.

In addition to an introduction and model demonstrations of existing structural systems for tall buildings, Er. Hemant Gor also delved into the fundamental design of special structures such as the Burj Khalifa. It was fascinating to know that one of the legs of Burj Khalifa was designed parallel to the Dubai Airport runway, in accordance with the Wind Rose diagram, to significantly enhance the resistance to wind action.

Students at the Department of Civil Engineering, BITS Pilani Dubai Campus explore the exciting field of map digitization in Geographic Information System (GIS) on UAE maps – a process of converting geo-spatial information on maps into digital form using ArcGIS. This specialized elective is offered by Dr. Brij Kishore Pandey.

The coordinates of point, line and polygon features are recorded and stored as the spatial data. The feature attributes are also recorded during the digitizing process. The training to students on ArcGIS enables them to investigate geo-referencing and digitizing a scanned map image.

A proud moment for our department's young alumnus, Mr. Yasasvi Malka

B.E. Civil Engineering BITS Pilani Dubai alum, Yasasvi Malka is an eduprenuer and environmentalist who founded 2 successful start-ups, aimed at creating a better world.​

During his time at BPDC, he founded the Wheelathon Foundation- an organization which conducts cycle rallies across South India to raise money for social causes. ​

He then founded EcoBharat, a start-up that combats plastic pollution in India. All his success led him to be nominated for the 'Smartest Young Executive' award by the Checkmate programme!​

He is passionate about mentoring young entrepreneurs introducing them to the exciting world of start-ups. ​

We are so proud of his success and wish him the best for the future!

Did you know that incorporating recycled plastic into road materials greatly improves their performance particularly in high temperature environments.

A recent research was conducted on this potential futuristic industry-relevant topic by Dr. Deepthi Mary Dilip, Assistant Professor of Transportation Engineering at BITS-Pilani, Dubai, who was invited as a guest speaker in the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) group seminar held at the University of Wollongong, Dubai Campus on June 14th, 2022.
