’sSpotlight

A space dedicated to promoting Fabulamundi’s playwrights and creatives 💡

‘Tu em vas prometre una història d’amor’ by Helena Tornero, one of the playwrights from the latest edition of New Voices, was recently presented at the ACT Shanghai Contemporary Theatre Festival 🇨🇳

Directed by Israel Solà, the production was performed at the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre on 5 and 6 September, with Ester Cort, Fermí Delfa, Montse Esteve, Sandra Pujol, and Roger Torns.

We first saw the play last year at Sala Beckett in Barcelona during our final New Voices group meeting, so it was especially lovely to see the work reach audiences in China!

Helena also joined Víctor Muñoz from Sala Beckett for a conversation on contemporary Catalan playwriting as part of the festival 🎭

🇮🇹 Our partner SHORT THEATRE is back in Rome for the festival’s 21st edition, running from 3–12 September across venues including La Pelanda, Teatro India, Teatro Vittoria, Cinema Troisi, MACRO, and MUCIV 🏛️

This year’s programme brings together more than 65 events and around 40 companies and artists from across Europe and beyond, spanning performance, dance, sound, visual work, talks, workshops, and more 🎭

On 31 August and 1 September, Piccola Bottega 2526 comes to Teatro di Roma with six new texts developed through a two-year workshop in collaboration with lacasadargilla 📝

Curated by New Voices writer Roberto Scarpetti the third edition brings together writers Andrea Basile, Elvira Buonocore, Valeria Chimenti, Lorenzo Fochesato, Federico Malvaldi, and Penelope Sangiorgi.

After two years of work, these six texts are ready to meet an audience! 🎭

This week, our partner Mousson D'Été returns to Pont-à-Mousson for six days devoted to contemporary playwriting 🎭

From 21–27 August, the festival brings together new French and international texts through staged readings, performances, talks, and its European Summer University, all taking place around the Abbaye des Prémontrés.

We’re especially happy to see New Voices playwright Oriol Morales i Pujolar in this year’s programme with Insectes, translated into French by Laurent Gallardo and directed by Véronique Bellegarde.

Set in an almost abandoned rural village, the play follows two former friends who reunite to imagine what future might still be possible for the place they once knew.

La Mousson has long been a place where writers, translators, directors, performers, students, and audiences can meet around new work, often at the very moment a text is beginning to find its life on stage.

It’s been one year since we closed the final chapter of Fabulamundi New Voices 2023/2026 🎭

For three years, 19 playwrights and organisations across Europe worked together, travelled, exchanged texts and ideas, and met new audiences along the way. We ran over 60 creative writing workshops, followed playwrights across borders through Cross the Map, and asked them to reflect on home, identity and their creative practice in In a New Light 🎥

New Voices officially ended a year ago, but many of the relationships that came out of it are still very much part of what we do today.

So, one year on, a little look back at the people, partner organisations, and places that made New Voices what it was 💛

✏️ Playwriting takes shape through dialogue, experimentation, and its encounter with the stage. This was the starting point for the first event of Le Stanze della Scrittura, hosted by Sala Beckett in Barcelona with Fausto Paravidino and Davide Carnevali.

A rich conversation on the ways playwriting continues to write and rewrite the present, and on theatre as a living space where artists and audience constantly meet.

Thank you to the Italian Cultural Institute of Barcelona for making this first encounter possible.

For the past ten years, Foreign Affairs’ Theatre Translator Mentorship has helped new voices travel across languages and reach new stages 🎭

This year, after funding fell through, its seventh edition could not go ahead. Now Foreign Affairs is raising £10,000 to make sure the mentorship does not stop here.

Foreign Affairs is part of the Fabulamundi community, and we would love to see this programme continue.

🎭 On Writing for the Stage 
On 15 July, acclaimed Italian playwrights Davide Carnevali and Fausto Paravidino come together at Sala Beckett to explore playwriting as a practice shaped by rehearsal, performance, and collaboration.  Together, they’ll reflect on the relationship between the written word and the stage, drawing on years of writing, directing, and working with actors.

Where a play begins…  🚪🎭 𝑳𝒆 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒛𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝒔𝒄𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒂 (The Writing Rooms) invites you into the creative process of contemporary playwriting, through performative lectures, live readings, and conversations with Italian playwrights.

FABULAMUNDI 📝

Last week, we wrapped up an intensive workshop on dramatic structures led by New Voices playwrights Helena Tornero, with the guidance of Magdalena Barile, for the students of the Playwriting for Performance course at the Civica Scuola di Teatro Paolo Grassi in Milan 🎭

Days of discussion, writing, and research marked another meaningful chapter in a long-standing collaboration between PAV/Fabulamundi and the Paolo Grassi Theatre School.

A shared experience that continues to create opportunities for exchange, new encounters, and fresh perspectives on dramaturgy.
