Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources - NIER

Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources - NIER NIER is delivering innovative solutions to improve sustainability and productivity NIER recognises that global challenges need regional solutions.

For the past 10 years, the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources, now more commonly known as NIER, has facilitated multidisciplinary research and industry engagement to drive innovation. NIER was established in 2010 with a clear agenda – to provide a new collective-based model for critical research in energy and resources. As a multidisciplinary research hub, NIER is driven by a vision of g

lobal leadership based on engaging the research community across multiple disciplines to address the rapidly emerging global challenges relating to four priority sectors of global significance: energy, resources, food and water. These critical resources underpin social, environmental, and economic prosperity. Through world-class research, Industry collaboration, and research education, NIER is strengthening regional resilience by delivering innovative solutions to improve sustainability and productivity, helping meet the resource needs of the future. The research activities at NIER are centered around four key areas:

Industrial Innovation – for a new generation of materials, processes, and technologies. Productivity and Efficiency - Optimising the use of resources and enhancing processes to reduce waste

Technologies and Utilisation - Transferring the latest technology into sectors of significance for sustainability and competitive advantage

Sustainability and Security - Meeting the environmental, social, and economic priorities for more resilient regions

Background

NIER was established in 2010 with a clear agenda – to provide a new collective based model for critical research in energy and resources. As a multidisciplinary research hub, NIER is driven by a vision of global leadership based on galvanising the research community across disciplines and across the sector to address the rapidly emerging issues of resource sustainability, the transformation of the energy system, and productivity. NIER research priorities sit alongside the energy reform agenda of government, industry and community and address rapidly emerging issues in the energy and resources sector. Specifically, NIER is engaged in research for: •Safe, new methods of managing ventilation air methane (VAM) generated by underground coal mines •The reduction of energy and water consumption in industries including coal and mineral processing •The reduction of carbon emissions through next generation carbon capture and storage technologies •Alternative energy sources, including geothermal and polymer solar cells •Improved efficiency in power generation •Climate change variability and adaption

•Health and safety in the resources sector •The social dimension of energy and resource management
