Side‑by‑side vehicles (SSVs) are widely used on farms and are often chosen over quad bikes because they offer greater towing capacity, the ability to carry passengers with seatbelts, and improved stability on uneven terrain.

This year’s theme, “Bee Together, for people and the planet”, recognises the vital role bees and other pollinators play in supporting ecosystems, food systems and communities around the world.

Through Global Footprints Scholarships, young Australians are exploring how to protect and strengthen these important systems.

For Frewoini, a 2022 scholar in agriculture, that journey started with a passion for bees and grew into hands-on work across the Pacific and Asia, learning how beekeeping supports livelihoods, food security and climate resilience.

“As a teenager my room was spotted with magazine cut outs of bees and beekeepers from around the world. The Global Footprints Scholarship was like a teleportation device that allowed me to exist in these images in real life. I had no idea just how my life would change.”

Her experience is a reminder that supporting pollinators is not just about protecting biodiversity. It is about sustaining communities, strengthening agriculture and investing in a healthier future for people and the planet.

Our first-year students recently participated in a dedicated Welfare Programming Day, focused on harm minimisation, building essential life skills, promoting wellbeing, and supporting positive decision-making.
Across the day, students engaged in a range of workshops. “The Gathering” explored responsible and safe social recreation and was delivered by Tocal Student Welfare support Lakin Agnew and Cessnock Youth & Community Services Manager Will Doran, who have worked together to deliver this program to thousands of young people across the Hunter. Students also took part in “Let’s Talk About Consent” delivered by Keiran from Legal Aid NSW, “DrugSafe” workshop delivered by Abi and Josiah from Social Futures, and “Healthy Relationships” delivered by Dayle and Damian from Family Planning NSW, each providing valuable knowledge around respect, safety, and personal responsibility. The day was also supported by our wonderful student counsellor Nina Curtis.
The program ran as a structured, full-day experience with rotating workshops, ensuring all student groups were able to participate in each session and engage meaningfully with the content. Importantly, these workshops also align with units of competency within both the Agriculture and Horse Care programs, reinforcing practical learning alongside personal development. Thank you to Nina and all of our presenters for such an impactful day.
