YAARS is a research project looking at trends in alcohol use amongst young people across Australia. This project is a collaboration between:
- The National Drug Research Institute, Curtin University
- The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, University of New South Wales
- Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre, Monash University
- St John of God Hospital, Bunbury
The
purpose of this study is to trial the first years data collection on a project designed to detect and predict emergent trends in risky alcohol use among heavy drinkers aged 16-19. The study aims to identify the nature of the alcohol use, related harms, contexts of use, and other influences such as alcohol promotions. The information from this project will be used to make recommendations on how to make things safer for young people. From March 2013 we will be looking for young people aged 16-19 to take part in our research. There are two ways in which you can participate - through a face-to-face interview or via an online survey.
1. Face-to-face interviews
Confidential interviews are conducted with one of our friendly researchers at coffee shops or public locations of convenience. Interviews take less than an hour and you will be asked about your experience and perceptions of alcohol use. You will be reimbursed $40 cash for your time and expertise in these face to face interviews. Interviews are confidential and anonymous. You may use a false name. If you're Perth based, to see if you are eligible, contact Tina on 9266 3170, text your interest on 0452 545 014 or email [email protected].
2. Online interviews
If you can't make it to a face-to-face interview, you can complete the survey online. This survey is open to all 16-19 year olds living in Australia who are regular drinkers of alcohol. The first page of the survey will tell you whether you're eligible to participate. Sharing your knowledge will help us understand current issues faced by young people who use alcohol and alcohol trends in Perth. This research may be used to influence government policies on a range of issues including harm reduction and treatment. FURTHER INFORMATION:
