Applications are now open for our Women in Engineering scholarship and scheme.

More women are choosing to study engineering or computer science at the University of Sydney than ever before 👩‍🎓

In 2027, up to 300 Women in Engineering scholarships are available, valued up to $10,000 for one year. Successful applicants will also benefit from an early conditional offer to an eligible undergraduate degree with a reduced ATAR requirement.

Open to undergraduate domestic female students commencing in 2027 and pursuing studies (including combined degrees) in the Faculty of Engineering.

Applications close 30 September.

🎉 Congratulations to Bula Coders, winners of the 2026 Humanitarian Innovation Awards Hackathon!

This week, we celebrated the creativity, collaboration and impact of students from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands region.

🥇 Bula Coders (University of the South Pacific) for Taqomaki, an AI framework designed to protect the biometric data of disaster-affected refugees.

🥈 PacificTwin (University of Sydney) for a Digital Twin AI program that helps rural communities prepare for disasters.

🥉 Boi Koro (University of Queensland) for Koro, a Digital Twin simulator supporting disaster planning and community resilience.

A huge congratulations to all finalists and participants for their innovative ideas and commitment to creating positive impact. 👏

Congratulations to the top 12 finalists of the 2026 Humanitarian Innovation Hackathon! Take a peek at the highlights from the weekend-long hybrid event 🏅

This year, teams had the opportunity to choose to tackle one of three challenges, each focusing on different UN Sustainable Development Goals.
🌏 Challenge A: Supporting the adoption of AI across non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
🌏 Challenge B: Employing digital twins for rural communities to assist in climate change adaptation.
🌏 Challenge C: Managing sensitive biometric data collected from disaster-displaced communities

Each challenge was designed to put teams' problem-solving skills to the test.

Congratulations to the following teams for making it as finalists: The-innovators, Local Host United, Matchalovers, Z.A.A.M., HumanityID, JaXon da Crew, Boi Koro, Chef Trio, PacificTwin, Bula Coders, Hack to the Future and Morning Geckos.

A big thank you as well to our judges, mentors and event organisers for coordinating this year’s Humanitarian Innovation Hackathon!

Imagine this: you're designing a game from a different perspective like through the eyes of the villain 🦹 🎲 What do you come up with?

This is exactly what participants were tasked with at the Faculty of Engineering's inaugural Game Jam, hosted earlier in June.

Centred around the theme, "Flip the Script", across 3 days, over 200 students worked in teams to develop games that challenged common game tropes, or featured a role reversal, with games played from the perspective of a different character.

39 incredible games were submitted, with four coming out on top:
🏆 1st Place: 'S-witch' by From Hardware
🥈 2nd Place: 'Dungeon Janitor' by USYD Pookies
🥉 3rd Place: 'Realistic Farming Simulator' by TAZ Reborn
🏅4th Place: 'The Judges' by Team 411

The winning games will be incubated on campus before heading to PAX Australia later in the year, where they'll have the opportunity to showcase their games.

A big thank you to Dr Karlos Ishac from the School of Computer Science for bringing this highly engaging and exciting event to life, and thank you to Faculty staff and industry partners for your support.
