Garvan graduated from the University of Sydney with a Masters in Architecture where he won the Sir John Sulman Award for the Most Outstanding Academic Record and was placed on the Dean’s List of Academic Achievement five years running. Since graduating, he has worked in London with Philippe Starck and in Sydney with leading architects Hannah Tribe and Daniel Boddam, before establishing his own practice – James Garvan Architecture. Work In Progress – Woollahra House.  From sketch to built form.
 
The curved stone façades began as a series of carefully resolved drawings and set-outs, but the real magic came from the craftsmen who brought the 4600 travertine and limestone blocks to life.
 
Every curve, joint and shadow reflects an extraordinary level of patience, precision and skill. I’m hugely grateful to and the stonemasons and builders whose craftsmanship transformed an idea on paper into something tactile, enduring and beautifully made.

Last night I attended the Australian Good Design Awards and was honoured to receive two awards in the Built Environment category - one for Architecture and one for Interior Design.
 
With a proud heritage dating back to 1958, the Australian Good Design Awards remain the nation’s oldest and most prestigious international design accolade, continuing to champion the critical role of design in shaping a brighter, fairer, and more sustainable future.
