🌟 Uchida Kraepelin Presents — 1st Japanese Speech Contest 2025
Grand Finale Successfully Held on 16 November 2025✨

The Final Round of the Japanese Speech Contest ended with inspiring performances that touched everyone in the audience. Our finalists' hard work and dedication were clearly visible on stage. Congratulations to all finalists, and special applause for our winners — you made us proud.

We were honored to have Professor Dr. Sayema Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration), University of Dhaka, grace the event as the Chief Guest‌. Kazi Bushra Ahmed Tithi, Public Relations and Cultural Specialist, Embassy of Japan in Bangladesh; Dr. Abdullah Al Mamun, Associate Professor and Chair of the Provost Committee, University of Dhaka; and Dr. Taiabur Rahman, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Dhaka, present as Special Guests of the event. The Grand Finale event Chaired by the Department Chairperson and the club moderator, Dr. Lopamudra Malek.
On that occasion, faculty members Dr. Md Jahangir Alam, Mr. Wasik Sajid Khan, Ms. Farida Yeasmin Banna, Ms. Sabrina Zahir, Ms. Ali Israt Jebun Tithi, and DJS Japanese Language club instructor, Kuniaki Okabayashi were also present.
Special thanks goes to our honorable Visiting Professor of the department, Prof. Keiichi Ogawa, Ph.D, Professor/ Department Chair in the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies, Kobe University, Japan, for attending the event.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Dhaka University and Kazuko Bhuiyan Welfare Trust for the purpose of improving and promoting Japanese language education at the Department of Japanese Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Dhaka University. The agreement was signed on behalf of Dhaka University by the University Treasurer, Professor Dr. M. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and on behalf of the Trust by the Founder and Managing Director, Tareq Rafi Bhuiyan.

Under this agreement, Kazuko Bhuiyan Welfare Trust will provide financial support for conducting special classes of Japanese language JLPT N4 and N5 levels every year.

The Department of Japanese Studies is honored to share that the first batch students Mr. Mubin Khan Afridi, Mr. Rakibul Hasan, and Mr. Sheikh Rashid Bin Islam has successfully completed their Master’s degree in Economics. During their Master’s program, they had the privilege of studying under the supervision of Professor Keiichi Ogawa, Ph.D. and the Department Chair in the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies (GSICS) at Kobe University, Japan. They completed this Masters program obtaining prestigious MEXT scholarship.

It’s our eminence pleasure that Maria Rahman, a 6th Batch Undergraduate Student from the Department of Japanese Studies has secured 1st Runners-up Position in 'Extempore Speech Segment' in Sociology Olympiad 2025, organized by Sociology Research and Writing Club, University of Dhaka.

Our department proudly cherish her achievement and wish her all the best for her upcoming endeavours.

A group of students along with the faculty members from the Chiba University, Japan, has paid a courtesy visit to the Department of Japanese Studies, University of Dhaka which is coordinated by the EKMATTRA Society. During their visit, they interact with the students regarding contemporary issues that inspired the participants. A special thanks to Mae Watanabe san and Hiroki Watanabe san for the initiative.

The ICT and Innovation Lab and Two Smart Classrooms of the Department of Japanese Studies of Dhaka University were inaugurated on August 18. Ambassador, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Bangladesh, Mr. Saida Shinichi, was present as the chief guest in this event, Mr. Syed Samiul Haque, Director of Japan Solartech (Bangladesh) Limited, was also present as a distinguished guest, Honorable Secretary (Bilateral Affairs) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam, and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India, Ambassador (Former) Liaquat Ali Chowdhury were present as special guests. The event was chaired by Associate Professor and Former Chairman of the Department of Japanese Studies, Dr Abdullah-Al-Mamun. The Chair (Acting) of the Department, Dr. Lopamudra Malek delivered the opening remarks at the ceremony. Other faculty members Wasik Sajid Khan, Farida Yeasmin Banna and Sabrina Zahir worked relentlessly for this auspicious event.
Initially, the classrooms of the Japanese Studies Department were allocated to the Arts Building and later shifted to the Social Sciences Building. In order to provide a better and technology-based environment to the students, in 2024, at the initiative of the then Chairman of the Department, Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam, and with the overall support of the Japan Solartech (Bangladesh) Limited, two classrooms of the department were converted into smart classrooms named after Syed Mahmudul Haque. In addition, a complete ICT and Innovation Lab was established to provide technical support to students of all years.
The department is truly grateful to Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam sir for his effort, dedication, enthusiasm, and contribution to the department.

A group of 15 Japanese school teachers has visited the Department of Japanese Studies, University of Dhaka, as part of the 'Overseas Training for Teachers' program for Japanese school teachers. During their visit, they exchanged their views with the students of the department. This program aims to enhance international and development education in schools and communities of Japan, as well as facilitate the exchange of experiences with teachers from other countries.

The Department of Japanese Studies (DJS) is proud to announce that Associate Professor Dr Dilruba Sharmin of the DJS has been awarded the prestigious Japan Foundation Japanese Studies Fellowship 2025-26. Her research topic is 'Sociolinguistic Challenges of Bangladeshi Diaspora in Japan and Potential Actions'. This is a significant success for the department.
