Are you passionate about (social) entrepreneurship and ready to take on a fully funded PhD? We’re happy to share that a new PhD position is now available at the beautiful Utrecht University School of Economics.
🔍 About the position
This 4-year PhD position is closely linked to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), the world’s leading research initiative on entrepreneurial activity. The project is enabled by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and focuses on the institutional determinants of (social) entrepreneurship.
You will:
✅ Be the driving force in the GEM data collection for the Netherlands
✅ Use the global GEM dataset to publish academic articles as part of your PhD
✅ Apply innovative computational techniques (e.g. machine learning) to generate insights
✅ Engage with societal stakeholders through policy briefs and knowledge sessions
✅ Possibly contribute to a new international entrepreneurial ecosystem pulse survey
You’ll work in a stimulating and collaborative academic environment, supervised by Shirley Qian Jin, Erik Stam and Niels Bosma, with strong support from an experienced GEM research network.
We’re looking for a motivated and talented early-career researcher with:
- A recently completed (research) Master’s degree in economics, business, or a related field.
- A clear interest in (social) entrepreneurship, ideally with experience in programming (e.g. Python, R) and using machine learning or AI in research.
- Solid quantitative research skills (e.g. surveys, experiments, web-scraping, regression), and a willingness to quickly learn any missing tools.
- Strong communication skills, a proactive and collaborative attitude, and confidence in engaging with societal partners (mostly in the Dutch context).
You are eager to contribute to impactful, high-quality research and complete your PhD within four years.
