๐โจ From IUB to the World Stage of Photonics Research! โจ๐
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), proudly congratulates our distinguished alumnus and former adjunct faculty member, Md Asif Al Suny, on securing a fully funded PhD position in Optics at the University of Rochester, USA, commencing in Fall 2026.
Asifโs remarkable journey is a testament to the transformative power of research, perseverance, and academic excellence. During his time at IUB, he was an integral member of the IUB Photonics Simulation Laboratory (IUBPSL), where he conducted advanced research on high-efficiency thin-film solar cells incorporating nanophotonic light-trapping structures under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Mustafa Habib Chowdhury, Head of the EEE Department and Director of IUBPSL.
His research contributions led to multiple publications in prestigious Scopus-indexed Q1 journals and IEEE international conferences, helping establish a strong foundation for his admission into some of the world's leading graduate programs. In addition to receiving a fully funded offer from the University of Rochester, Asif also earned graduate study offers from several highly respected U.S. universities, reflecting the quality of his academic and research achievements.
From being ranked first in his graduating class, maintaining a 100% merit scholarship, and appearing on the Vice Chancellorโs Honor List nine times, to contributing to cutting-edge research and teaching as an adjunct faculty member, Asif has consistently demonstrated excellence in every endeavor.
His success reflects not only his exceptional dedication and talent but also the vibrant culture of research, mentorship, and innovation nurtured within the EEE Department and IUBPSL.

Md Asif Al Suny, an alum and former adjunct faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at IUB, has secured a fully funded PhD position in Optics at the University of Rochester, USA. Starting Fall 2026, Asif plans to pursue advanced research in the fields of nonlinear optics and metasurfaces, two rapidly evolving areas at the forefront of modern photonics research.
