The people of Muktagacha had a heart-felt demand for the establishment of a college for higher learning. To materialise this demand, politicians, educationists, businessmen, social workers and local elites came forward. In 1967,a 31-member convening committee was formed at Muktagacha Municipal Community Hall (Present Muktagacha Municipal Library) with the then parliamentary Secretary, Mr. With the
financial support of the local people, this college began its march at the abandoned house of Maharaja Suryakanta Acharya Chowdhury in 1967. At that time, this college bore the name “Muktagacha College”. Many patrons of learning helped the college with financial assistance during the establishment of the college and later. Among the donors, one was Mr.Chintaharan Shaha who had donated 4.43 acres of land for the college in the Kajal Kota Beel area in 1974. Abul Bashar took the responsibility of the college as it’s first Principal. In the war of liberation, the students of Muktagacha college took active parts and some of them embraced martyrdom. In 1972, in the newly independent state, Mr. Khandakar Abdul Maleq Shahidullah, President of the then governing body of the Adhoc committee, proposed a new name for this college in its first meeting and according to his proposal, the college was named “Shahid Smrity College” in remembrance of the martyrs of freedom fighters and the martyred students of the college. Considering the standard of teaching, reputation and the past heritage, the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh nationalised this college on 1.3.1980 and this college assumed the new name “Govt. Shahid Smrity College”. Since the establishment, this college has been conducting education at HSC & Degree(Pass) level with reputation and thus fulfilling the demand of higher education of the people of Muktagacha. With the passage of time, the people of Muktagacha developed their heartfelt demand for making their children educated in Honours and Masters courses. In view of fulfilling this very demand, Honours courses in Bangla, English, Economics, Accounting, Social work, Management and Political Science have been introduced in the college with the direct assistance of local former M.P. Khalid. Apart from these, there are 52 efficient teachers, rich laboratories, a library and infrastructural facilities in this college.
