Project Imbituba

Project Imbituba As a multidisciplinairy team of four Civil Engineering master students, we are going to investigate sedimentation issues in the port of Imbituba, Brazil.

For our master studies at the University of Technology in Delft, we are going to investigate sedimentation issues in the port of Imbituba, Brazil. Our team consists of 4 civil engineering students, specialising in different areas. We'll operate our investigation from the University of Florianopolis

In this picture, the problem that we are investigating in the Port of Imbituba is explained in a nutshell. In the yellow circle, the port's berthing area is situated.
After an extension of the main breakwater in the early 80's the bay has been trying to rotate counter clockwise, gradually filling the ports basin area (yellow circle) and eroding the dune lands in the North (orange circle). To prevent the rotation, 3 groynes where constructed (red circle). Currently the groynes have reached their maximum capacity and can hardly stop the rotation any more. With a large dredging operation conducted in 2014 the equilibrium of the bay has been disturbed even further, and now the entire bay area is importing sediment.

We are currently investigating and testing what measures can be taken to prevent further fill up of the port and allow the port authority to maintain the required navigation depth without yearly and extensive maintenance.
