How can art help children engage with complex ideas, questions, and ways of knowing?

Werklund professor Dr. Alex Berry is investigating how art studio practices can support young children in thinking deeply, sharing ideas, and building knowledge together.

Through Encounters with Materials, a collaboration by the Calgary Reggio Network Association at Common Digs' ReImagine Centre, educators explored the potential of discarded materials as catalysts for curiosity, communication, and discovery.

By bringing research and hands-on exploration together, this work highlights the powerful role art can play in helping children make meaning and engage with the world around them.

Balancing family, work, and grad school isn’t easy—but finding the right program can make all the difference.

That’s what led Master of Education student Hazel Palmer from Ontario to the School and Applied Child Psychology program at Werklund.

Now preparing to graduate in June, Hazel reflects on the practicum experiences and supportive community that shaped her journey as a psychometrist and continue to support her path toward becoming a provisional psychologist.
