Dr. Ángela Cánovas and Dr. Javed Sidiqi, whose work improves animal health, agricultural productivity and crop resilience in a changing environment, have been recognized by the Royal Society of Canada.

Cánovas, of the Ontario Agricultural College, and Sidiqi, of the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, have been named members of the RSC’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

The prestigious honour recognizes emerging leaders for outstanding early-career achievements and their potential to advance knowledge that benefits Canada.

is launching its first BFA program beginning in fall 2027. The new Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Theatre will be the only university-level music theatre degree in Ontario. The program brings together performance, production and research to provide students with a comprehensive music theatre education in a collaborative, interdisciplinary learning environment.

As a new partner institution in The Schulich Foundation's network, is excited to welcome its inaugural cohort of Schulich Leaders this fall. As recipients of Canada's most prestigious STEM scholarship program, Schulich Leaders are entrepreneurial-minded students recognized for their outstanding leadership, creativity and innovation. Among them are A***n Thakur and Matteo Volpini, who are driven by a shared desire to create meaningful impact through artificial intelligence and sustainable agriculture.

A recent graduate of Southwood Secondary School in Cambridge, Ont., A***n Thakur’s interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning drew him to U of G’s Computer Engineering program. Eager to launch his own start-up, he hopes to build a strong foundation through the program’s co-op stream and experiential learning opportunities. Driven by a desire to help others, he aspires to use technology to create meaningful solutions and make a positive impact in people's lives.

Growing up on a small hobby farm in Grimsby, Ont., Matteo Volpini saw firsthand the impact that disease, pests and environmental stressors can have on crops. Inspired to find solutions, the Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School graduate chose U of G's Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program, where he hopes to deepen his knowledge of plant science and food sustainability. His goal is to one day start a business that supports Canadian farmers by developing more resilient crop varieties able to withstand pests, disease and unpredictable weather.

Backed by $8 million in federal funding, Dr. Chris Todd Hittinger will become the new Eddie Goldenberg Research Chair of Canada in Biodiscovery, Biodesign and Bioproduction at as part of the Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative. His appointment in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology begins on July 1, 2027.

The research program will help address Canada’s urgent challenges in energy security by harnessing the potential of yeasts as sources of fuels and other bioproducts. It will drive the expansion of U of G's existing biotechnology strengths and propel a new Centre for Biodiscovery, Biodesign, and Bioproduction, serving as a national hub linking research, training and industry collaboration.

Dr. Hittinger's appointment is part of the first phase of the Initiative, aimed at strengthening Canada’s position as a global destination for top scientists and innovators.

The revolutionary program, known as BeanGPT, gathers data on growing conditions, soil, climate and more, recommending the best bean. The first "super bean" developed by the program is optimized for high yield and disease resistance.

BeanGPT is laying the groundwork for an independent food supply by improving productivity and allowing farmers to grow food on Canadian soil. Researchers hope to expand BeanGPT into other markets, creating an AI hub for all crops.
