I’m a Talent Management Assistant at a Canadian University where I support the Recruitment and Retention team. After graduating from a Business Management program, I got my feet wet in a variety of temp and term HR Assistant rolls in the not-for-profit, public, and private
sectors to earn my way into my current position. In all of these roles it was part of my job to post open positions and screen resumes against those postings to short-list candidates for hiring managers. I had to quickly make decisions to narrow down sometimes hundreds of resumes, to 5 – 10 qualified candidates to move forward. Before I returned to school for Business Management, I was a Graphic Designer and within 5 years, moved my way up to Marketing Director. You’re probably wondering why I made a career change if I was so successful right? Success doesn’t always equal fulfillment. The career path I chose made me feel empty. My purpose was to make more money for a corporation by convincing people to buy things they might not really need. I would wake up most days wondering how I could get out of going to work that day and one day I decided I didn’t want to feel that way for the rest of my career so I changed direction.
