Reinventing the research approach: the SHIFT Research & Advocacy Program at Concordia University reframes the way higher education institutions can do research and who that research is for. 🎥 WATCH FULL VIDEO to gain insight on how we’re helping researchers address community priorities and turn research into socially transformative action.

Program fellow Elena Tresierra-Farbridge gets to the heart of it: “really what [research] is, it’s trying to understand the world and learn how to make it better for the people who live it.”

Thank you to our community partners, Tkà:nios - it Grows and JIA Foundation for experimenting with us!

💕NEW in the SHIFT Journal💕

“Love letters to social transformation” is now live in time for Valentine’s Day! In this special edition of the SHIFT Journal, we invited submissions from our community about loving home & land. We split the submissions into three categories for easier reading. You can read them all online now, including Letters for Mapping Home:

Our memories of both tangible and intangible homes lay pathways for our internal journeys, sometimes “backward” to a home left behind, sometimes “forward” as maps to future places. Our bodies function that way too: through our senses we can exist again in different places, find places can truly “hold” us, and reach our hands across space to connect with what we’ve left behind or lost. The pieces in this section speak to that embodied experience of grief, strength, and what it means to move on.

💕NEW in the SHIFT Journal💕

“Love letters to social transformation” is now live in time for Valentine’s Day! In this special edition of the SHIFT Journal, we invited submissions from our community about loving home & land. We split the submissions into three categories for easier reading. You can read them all online now, including Letters for Cultivating Home:

To cultivate the land is to tend the soil, establish infrastructure, and sustain life. While cultivation can be physical, it can also be metaphorical. Cultivating home may be as simple as curating communication and planting the seeds needed to grow your community. To cultivate the land is to transform an unfamiliar environment into home, even if that is a second home, and surrender to the comfort of knowing and being known.

A huge thank you everyone who submitted their beautiful work!

“We’re looking forward to drawing lessons from the Pratt Center to inform the development of SHIFT’s research and advocacy program and impactful community-based research more broadly at the university,” says Elisabeth Cramer, manager of community-based learning and research.

Free and open to all, the event will connect insights from the Pratt Center for Community Development’s community-engaged research and participatory planning to SHIFT’s evolving practice around research and advocacy. The goal is to strengthen both university and community actors’ capacity to envision deeper collaborations for systemic change.

“Beyond Publications” will take place on November 19. 2025, from 12 – 2 p.m., at the SHIFT Centre for Social Transformation. 1400 Maisonneuve Boulevard W.
