🇰🇷✨ Get a glimpse of what your South Korea Summer Abroad might look like through the eyes of a past participant! Mengtong shows a day in her life as a participant in the program.

“Most of my classes were finished by the morning, which meant my afternoons were free for group discussions, assignments, or just exploring the city at my own pace.

Tips for first-timers in Seoul:
• Get a local SIM card or eSIM right away (you’ll need it for maps, payments, and translations)
• Public transportation is super-efficient — a T-money card is a must
• Don’t over-plan. Some of the best moments come from wandering!”

“It’s already the last week of UofT Summer Abroad at Oxford! I can’t believe how quickly time flies! This week, we’ll be going on our final fieldtrip as a class. We’ll be returning to London to explore the Churchill War Rooms, which, during the Second World War, was an underground fortified bunker from which Britain’s Prime Minister at the time, Winston Churchill, conducted the war with his Cabinet and military high command.”

Photos:
1. Students looking at various other exhibits, including audiovisuals and a map of bomb hits in the vicinity. Fun Fact: after a bomb had a close call with the War Rooms, Churchill ordered concrete to be poured on top of the bunker to provide extra protection. This 3 meter wide concrete ceiling was colloquially called “The Slab”.

6. A wax figure pins something on the map in the mapping room. The War Rooms had many wax figures which went a long way to help us mentally situate ourselves in the bunker during the War. - Kai Kang Nie -

We continue with Kai’s Summer Abroad in Oxford!

“It’s week 3 of UofT Summer Abroad at Oxford, and this week, our HIS389 class went on an overnight fieldtrip to IWM North in Manchester and Western Approaches Museum in Liverpool. IWM North is a special exhibit war museum that shows hourly “360° Movies”, along with its normal exhibit. The Western Approaches Museum is situated on the site of former Western Approaches Command, a major player in the war in the Atlantic during the Second World War.”

Photos:
1. A student interacting with a typewriter. The Western Approaches Museum had many small “interactables” that made the museum experience exponentially more fun (and maybe even a bit distracting).
2. A student dons a Brodie helmet, no doubt ready for combat.
3. Students playing with a telephone switchboard. An elderly couple happened to be in the switchboard room at the same time as us; they explained how an operator work the switchboard and connect you to your intended receiver.
4. A “Kilroy” mock graffiti. Kilroy is probably one of these oldest known “memes” to have existed, being popular among American GIs during the Second World War.
5. A student stamps a “museum passport”. This passport could be filled by finding metal stampers in certain rooms.
6. A student tests her typing speed on a typewriter.
7. Peter (feat. Jack’s criminal side-eye).
8. Students viewing the 360° Movies presented at IWM North. The topics of these short 10 minute movies ranged from firsthand accounts of the First World War, to remembrance of fallen soldiers, and even the Ukrainian experience in the current Russo-Ukrainian War.
9. Top - students gathered around an exhibit. Bottom - a student tries to guess a “scent of war”.
10. An exhibit made up of luggages from refugees fleeing wartorn homelands. - Kai Kang Nie -

Week 2 of Kai’s Summer Abroad in Oxford 🇬🇧✨

“Our UofT Summer Abroad HIS389 class took a fieldtrip to Bletchley Park and IWM Duxford Air Museum! These two sites were of great significance during the Second World War. RAF Duxford, as it was known during the war, was one of Britain’s most impactful air bases during the Battle of Britain, which was waged in the skies. Meanwhile, the women and men of Bletchley Park worked tirelessly day and night to decrypt German Enigma codes. It was here that Alan Turing’s team developed the Bombe, a machine capable of consistently decrypting German transmissions.”

3. The massive wing jet engines of the supersonic Concorde passenger jet.
4. Boarding the Concorde.
5. An artist paints a watercolour of the Cold War-era Soviet MiG-21 fighter-interceptor jet.
6. an exterior photo of the Bletchley Park Mansion, where the earliest efforts to decrypt Axis transmissions during the war occurred.
7. Top - a German Enigma machine, used for decoding messages received from German High Command. Bottom - a replica of the Bombe, used by the British to decrypt intercepted German Enigma codes.
8. Top - a student attempts to decode a message. Bottom - a pile of mock files. Both interactive exhibits and small details like realistic files strewn around made the Bletchley Park Museum a very hands-on and immersive experience.

We continue with Kai’s Summer Abroad experience in Oxford! 🇬🇧✨

“During week 1 of UofT Summer Abroad at Oxford, our HIS389 class went on our first fieldtrip to IWMLondon andl HMSBelfast. Imperial War Museum London is the national war museum of the UK, which hosts exhibits that cover British involvement in the First World War to present-day peacekeeping initiatives. The HMS Belfast is a decommissioned Town-class light cruiser that’s run as a museum ship by IWM. Its service history spans the entirety of the Second World War and Korean War.
