🔔 Cyprus Electricity Market — Seven Months On ⚡
📈 Elevated prices persisted in April 2026 — alongside near-daily zero-price events driven by strong PV generation
The latest PHAETHON Electricity Market Report examines how geopolitical tensions, renewable generation & system flexibility shaped electricity market outcomes in Cyprus during April 2026.
📊 Key insights from April 2026:
💶 Average Day-Ahead Market (DAM) price: 171.67 €/MWh — lower than March, but still elevated due to geopolitical fuel cost pressures.
📈 Volume-Weighted Average Price (DWAP): 224.51 €/MWh — reflecting persistently high traded-weighted electricity prices.
⚡ Zero-price events: Observed on all days except 1 April, driven by strong midday PV generation & low demand.
🔥 Price peaks persisted: Maximum MCP reached 309 €/MWh during evening demand peaks when conventional generation dominated supply.
⚡ Forward Market (FM): Trading activity reached its highest level since market launch.
🌞 Generation mix: Conventional generation in the DAM declined significantly, while PV generation strongly suppressed midday prices.
🌗 Intraday price dynamics: Stable overnight prices, sharp midday reductions during PV peak output & evening price recovery as renewable generation declines.
⚖️ What drives prices: Interaction between renewable generation, residual load & system flexibility constraints.
🔎 New in this report:
📉 Near-universal zero-price conditions were observed for the first time since market launch, with zero MCPs recorded on all days except 1 April.
☀️ Higher solar irradiation did not necessarily translate into proportionally higher market-cleared RES volumes, highlighting system & operational constraints.
🗣 “April’s results confirm that while geopolitical tensions continue to exert upward pressure on electricity prices, price formation within the Cypriot market remains strongly shaped by the interaction between photovoltaic generation, demand, and system flexibility”, notes Dr Andreas Kyprianou, Associate Professor at UCY, Member of PHAETHON CoE, and co-author of the report.

💡 Seven months into Cyprus’s competitive electricity market, the picture is becoming clearer: PV generation is increasingly driving zero-price conditions during midday hours, while evening price spikes continue to reflect the importance of system flexibility, residual demand & conventional generation.
