PHAETHON-Centre of Excellence R&I Centre of Excellence for Intelligent, Efficient & Sustainable Energy Solutions (prev PVLab_FOSSUCY)

**PHAETHON Centre of Excellence (CoE)**

PHAETHON CoE is being established through the eponymous Teaming for Excellence Horizon Europe project, representing the evolution and upgrade of the University of Cyprus FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy, towards a world-class autonomous Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence (CoE). The Centre aims to serve as a catalyst for excellence in th

e energy field, focusing on the development of solutions and applications that can address a wide range of contemporary global energy challenges. Driven by the timely energy transition and prevailing climate change challenges, the Research and Innovation (R&I) focus of PHAETHON CoE is on intelligent, efficient, and sustainable energy solutions, aligned to the European Green Deal priorities. This remit places PAHETHON CoE at the heart of the energy ecosystem in Cyprus, the surrounding region, and worldwide, to ensure a more sustainable and secure energy future.

**Research focus on themes with key growth potential**

The PHAETHON CoE research themes include:

o renewable energy sources and grid integration,
o storage and e-mobility,
o smart grids and intelligent energy,
o green hydrogen,
o energy socioeconomics, multi-level governance and environmental sustainability. Moreover, the Centre’s research focus represents a key area of significant growth potential and high priority for:

o Cyprus -- the green and digital energy transition are completely aligned with the Smart Specialisation Strategy of Cyprus. o the European Union -- addressing the EU Climate Action, European Green Deal, and REPowerEU initiatives.

**About Project PHAETHON**

The PHAETHON Teaming Project was submitted and awarded funding under the prestigious Horizon Europe “Teaming for Excellence” Call for Proposals. Along with the University of Cyprus (UCY), the other partners in the consortium are the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation Cyprus Seeds, the Technical University of Denmark, and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. The project’s main outcome is to upgrade the highly successful UCY FOSS Research Centre for Sustainable Energy to an autonomous and self-sustaining Centre of Excellence in the energy field. It also serves as an academic and professional conduit between three countries (Cyprus, Denmark, and The Netherlands), jointly tackling the challenges and working towards facilitating the much-needed green transition.

🔔 Cyprus Electricity Market — Seven Months On ⚡
📈 Elevated prices persisted in April 2026 — alongside near-daily zero-price events driven by strong PV generation

The latest PHAETHON Electricity Market Report examines how geopolitical tensions, renewable generation & system flexibility shaped electricity market outcomes in Cyprus during April 2026.

📊 Key insights from April 2026:
💶 Average Day-Ahead Market (DAM) price: 171.67 €/MWh — lower than March, but still elevated due to geopolitical fuel cost pressures.
📈 Volume-Weighted Average Price (DWAP): 224.51 €/MWh — reflecting persistently high traded-weighted electricity prices.
⚡ Zero-price events: Observed on all days except 1 April, driven by strong midday PV generation & low demand.
🔥 Price peaks persisted: Maximum MCP reached 309 €/MWh during evening demand peaks when conventional generation dominated supply.
⚡ Forward Market (FM): Trading activity reached its highest level since market launch.
🌞 Generation mix: Conventional generation in the DAM declined significantly, while PV generation strongly suppressed midday prices.
🌗 Intraday price dynamics: Stable overnight prices, sharp midday reductions during PV peak output & evening price recovery as renewable generation declines.
⚖️ What drives prices: Interaction between renewable generation, residual load & system flexibility constraints.

🔎 New in this report:
📉 Near-universal zero-price conditions were observed for the first time since market launch, with zero MCPs recorded on all days except 1 April.
☀️ Higher solar irradiation did not necessarily translate into proportionally higher market-cleared RES volumes, highlighting system & operational constraints.

🗣 “April’s results confirm that while geopolitical tensions continue to exert upward pressure on electricity prices, price formation within the Cypriot market remains strongly shaped by the interaction between photovoltaic generation, demand, and system flexibility”, notes Dr Andreas Kyprianou, Associate Professor at UCY, Member of PHAETHON CoE, and co-author of the report.

💡 Seven months into Cyprus’s competitive electricity market, the picture is becoming clearer: PV generation is increasingly driving zero-price conditions during midday hours, while evening price spikes continue to reflect the importance of system flexibility, residual demand & conventional generation.

🔔 Cyprus Electricity Market — Six Months On ⚡
📈 Record-high prices and strong volatility define March 2026

The latest PHAETHON Electricity Market Report examines how geopolitical developments, fuel costs, and renewable generation shaped electricity prices — revealing the highest price levels since market launch alongside pronounced intraday fluctuations.

📊 Key insights from March 2026:
💶 Average Day-Ahead Market (DAM) price: 190.58 €/MWh — the highest level observed since market launch.
📊 Price volatility: Sharp intraday swings, with zero prices at midday and price spikes in the evening.
🌞 Zero-price events: Frequent between 09:30–15:00, driven by strong PV generation.
🔥 Price peaks intensified: Maximum MCP reached 299 €/MWh, during evening demand peaks with low RES output.
⚡ Forward Market (FM): Average traded volume 97.27 MWh, among the highest recorded so far.
🌱 Generation mix: RES generation reached its highest level to date, yet conventional generation remained critical in non-solar hours.
⚖️ What drives prices: Interaction of renewable generation, residual load, and system flexibility — with external fuel costs playing a key role this month.

🔎 Market insights:
March illustrates the three-phase daily price pattern — stable high prices overnight, sharp midday declines due to PV output, and strong evening rebounds as renewables fade and demand rises. Importantly, even at similar RES levels, prices varied significantly, highlighting the critical role of residual demand and system constraints.

🗣 “March’s results highlight how external factors, such as fuel price increases driven by geopolitical tensions, can significantly influence electricity market outcomes”, notes Dr Andreas Kyprianou, Associate Professor at UCY, Member of PHAETHON CoE, and co-author of the report. “At the same time, while renewable energy can strongly suppress prices during high-generation periods, overall price formation remains dependent on residual load and system flexibility”.

📘 Download the full PHAETHON Electricity Market Report — March 2026:

💡 Six months into the new market, a clearer picture is emerging: renewables are driving midday price reductions, but price volatility and overall levels remain sensitive to external costs, demand conditions, and system flexibility. Managing this interaction will be key to delivering stable, affordable, and sustainable electricity.
