WEEK 7 RECAP‼️

7 weeks complete here in the DR with the Fall 2026 group as we almost reach the halfway point!

On Monday, many of the students went to Emmanuel House to work with the teachers and kids. They were delighted to have a calmer day with the students engaging with them in the classroom, teaching English, playing at recess and serving lunches.

On Tuesday, we had a full class day. In Spanish class, we prepared some review games to review vocabulary and tenses we have learned all semester. We gustarse to express what they like and don't like and used Blooket to make a fun way for them to review and compete. In Bible class, they talked about the influence of the culture and history of the DR on the church styles and differences of various denominations and what scripture has to say about multiple topics.

On Wednesday, we headed to Lily House in the morning where they needed some more publication help to promote a costume event. Our students, being the humble troopers they are, put on all sorts of costumes to help shoot a video and even did some roller skating for the reels they wanted to create. Their willingness to serve and help even at their own expense has been so great to watch! In the afternoon, we went to Pasitos on a rainy day and reviewed much of the plan for this week as parents arrive as well as review so much of what we have learned in English class. It is incredible to see the progress of the girls English and how much they enjoy class with the students as their professors. They are prepared to teach the fruits of the spirit and recite the verse in English!

On Thursday, we had another class day but more importantly, it was Ruthie's birthday!! They were all surprised in Spanish class when they were told they were getting a surprise exam but actually we went to Jumbo and McDonalds for Ruthie's special day! A great birthday meal and some shopping and flowers made it a special day. During Bible class in the afternoon, they continued throughout Mathew and had questions answered about prayer and intimacy with God in personal relationship and communication with Him.

On Friday, we had a full day off to rest and prepare for the weekend and a long coming week! Students rested, got ahead on homework, and hung out.

On Saturday, we met in the morning to prepare our lesson before we headed to the girls orphanage in the capital. We started off with group questions to continue to get to know them and a fun game of Fishbowl to have fun with them. The students decided to teach the Prodigal Son out of Luke 15 to talk about the Fathers reaction when we come home after being away and the grace of God to receive us and celebrate the lost being found. Not only did they act out the whole story, we split into groups and asked questions to hear from the girls about what they understood from the story and how they view themselves in this parable. It's amazing to watch the students grow in not only their Spanish, but their confidence to lead and teach at sites where we desire to plant seeds that God can grow.

On Sunday, we spent the day doing airport runs to pick up the first arriving parents! It is the start of parents week where some students and parents get to reunite after 7 weeks and share time together and serve alongside one another.

WEEK 6 RECAP‼️

On Monday, the students went to Emmanuel House and worked with the kids who had LOTS of energy after a long weekend. The students served energetically and patiently despite being climbed on, scratched and bitten. It is a huge help for the teachers to have more helpers in the classrooms to give individual attention to the kids who need it and for the students to help get some energy out at recess. They spent the rest of the day resting.

On Tuesday, we had a full class day. In Spanish class, we had two surprise guests come to help give class! Two translators who work with Score and are good friends of our group came and taught Dominican Spanish and slang terms. They "encouraged" the students to speak using nerf guns as motivation. We had a blast as the students guessed the meaning of the words, played a review game to be quizzed on it, and then acted out skits to use their words. In Bible class, the students continued diving into Matthew and talking about the person of Matthew and how his life and context at the time affected the writing.

On Wednesday, the girls of the group were invited to a women's conference here at the church where they got to take part in worship, devotions, and activities to encourage women in ministry and get to know some Dominicans and Americans working here in the DR. In the afternoon, we went to Pasitos to continue with a Bible lesson and English class. We taught from Galatians the fruits of the spirit. The students helped teach them in English and explain each one giving examples. Then, we split into groups and did some review of what we have been learning.

On Thursday, we had another full class day. In Spanish, we learned future tense and did some activities to practice it. The students shared what they will be doing in 10 years and we even played jeopardy to review the tense and compete. In Bible class, they continued in Matthew and looked at number patterns and understanding Old Testament references in the gospels.

On Friday, we had the morning and afternoon off before we headed to a youth service we were asked to help lead close to here. Some of the students helped lead worship then small group questions after the sermon and a game with the youth.

On Saturday, we headed out to ministry in the afternoon but first satisfied some McDonald's cravings the students have been asking for. They were very happy to get a taste of home and try it here. Afterwards, we went to Nellys Place, a kids bible school ministry led by Nelly and her husband. She gives a safe place for kids to come after school throughout the week to get a snack and get help with homework and on Saturdays does Bible lessons. We got there and got to know the kids in groups then led a teaching on David and Goliath. The students have become quite the actors to teach lessons and the kids loved it!

On Sunday, we went to church with the girls of Pasitos and got to experience a new church and enjoyed getting to see the girls and worship with them. We ended the week with a small group led by Cam sharing her testimony and time together reflecting on the week.

Another great week in the books as the students are fully in their groove and eagerly anticipating many family members coming this next week! Please continue to be praying for our students as they give and grow!

WEEK 5 WEEKLY RECAP‼️

Take a look at what the Climb students were up to this week!!

On Monday, some of the group went to Emmanuel House to serve in classrooms, at recess, and taking lunches. They are getting more and more comfortable each time taking initiative in classrooms to lead and take care of the kids in any way to assist the teachers.

On Tuesday, we had a full class day of Spanish in the morning and Bible in the afternoon. In Spanish class, we learned a new tense: past imperfect. We practiced it along with the other tenses we have learned then each student practiced the tense with examples. In Bible class, they began in Matthew with some more context to set the scene for the other gospels.

On Wednesday, we started off early at Lily House and the students worked very hard to do some work on the missionary house. Trimming hedges, mowing the lawn, chopping branches, and picking up scraps all in the blazing heat. Some went to help with inventory on the jewelry to help the anti-trafficking centers jewelry business. In the afternoon, we went to Pasitos and and continued with our Bible verse memorization and English class. The girls look forward to the classes with the students to practice concepts and vocabulary and make it fun and the students have done amazing work with them!

On Thursday, we had Spanish class in the morning and did some activities to combine all the tenses we have learned: present, preterite, imperfect, and indicative mode. They changed sentences to cater to the tense and practiced all they've learned to translate sentences given. It was a holiday here so no Bible class and we went to the store and got snacks and ice cream.

On Friday, we had a rest day to recover from the week, get some homework done, and prepare for the weekend. Some rested, some spent the day at the beach!

On Saturday, we met in the morning to make a plan for the day of ministry then headed out to lunch to Village 14 first. We split the kids of the community into older and younger kids where we taught the story of Cain and Abel and Gods warning against being controlled my emotion and the consequences of sin. The older group was led by profound questions after reading the chapter together and the little kids got some activities, questions, and songs. After the lessons and some play time with the kids, we headed to Consuelo to the church for kids ministry. There, we did some dynamics and songs and acted out the same story, asking questions and engaging them more. That ended with play time outside to connect with the kids and have some fun with them before giving snack and heading out.

Sunday, we went to church in San Pedro where we have been attending and getting more connected. It is National Day of the Bible here in the DR so today's service was to talk about the purpose of the scriptures and how to not just use it but to live by it. After an afternoon of rest, we will finish the week with small group led by Luke!

WEEK 4 RECAP‼️

We are officially a quarter way through this semester and the students have really acclimated into routine and have been doing amazing work!

On Monday, we all headed to Emmanuel House and were greeted by the kids with LOTS of energy from the weekend! As you can see, we were on recess duty and it was chaos but a blast. Anytime we can allow the teachers to sit down and relax and help get some energy out of the kids, we are happy to do that. The students thrive in playing, talking, or even just letting kids be their hair stylist. Once recess ended, our students split up into kindergarten, 7th grade English class, and younger special needs class while the others helped bring water jugs to the school and took lunches to classrooms. The rest of the day is usually always recovering from the morning spent there and getting ahead on classes.

On Tuesday, we started with Spanish class in the morning where the students learned a new tense: past imperfect. We compared it to the other past tense we learned and practiced conjugated new verbs. Our Bible professor is away for the week so they didn't have Bible class but we took a trip to the store where the students stocked up on necessities, snacks, and got some much needed ice cream. In the evening, we had a collective Spanish review game night. With all the vocabulary we have learned, we split into teams and played games like categories, charades, and hot seat. This group always brings the energy and fun and the students got a great opportunity to review and practice some vocab.

On Wednesday, we had our full ministry day. In the morning, we headed to Lily House where they were shooting some new social media content and needed some models. The students did the excruciating work of eating desserts, trying coffees, posing for pictures and skating on the roller rink. It is not the typical ministry service we do but it is what they asked for and was a huge help to them and the students were happy to oblige. Some of the students came to the English class with the girls to help with some sentence practice. In the afternoon, we went to Pasitos to continue with English class. Each week, we teach a bible verse to memorize in English and Spanish for a prize and then we split into 3 groups to teach. The students know their groups and do an amazing job of leading the lessons, teaching with confidence, and making it fun for all of them.

On Thursday, we had another Spanish class in the morning where we did activities for them to make sentences using all of the tenses they have learned. Starting with a basic sentence in English, they translated it to Spanish present tense, to indicative mode, to preterite, to imperfect. They did a great job recalling conjugations and changing the sentences according to all of the tenses they have learned thus far. Then, they got a huge list of vocabulary to describe peoples personality traits, physical appearance, feelings, and character traits.

On Friday, we took a day off rest day for students to recover, catch up on sleep, and finish up homework assignments for the week. On top of the ministry and activities, many of them have reading assignments or papers to write. For the sake of their school work and us being present and energized at sites, we prioritize rest so everyone is ready to give.

On Saturday, we met in the morning to plan our ministry for the day where the students gave input on what they wanted to lead and teach at the site. Then after lunch, we all headed to the capital to a girls orphanage we partner with. Upon arriving, we split into groups where we got to know them with some questions and conversation. Then, we did a speed- get to know you activity where the students lined up across from them and would each say their names then their favorite of the given category (color, animal, fruit, food, drink, dessert, sport, etc.) and then we would see who had favorites in common. It was a fun way to get down many of their names and try to connect through common similarities. Afterwards, we introduced a topic of the fruits of the spirit and we split back into groups and and each group of students taught on the first three: love, joy and peace. We asked the girls questions and taught on what scripture says about these words and compared worldly love, joy, and peace compared to biblical fruits. They had great discussion and response. We ended with acting out the parable of the bags of gold where we emphasized that fruits of the spirit are gifts from God meant to be used, grown and multiplied and not to be kept for ourselves. It was a great connection with the girls and we look forward to returning!

On Sunday, we all returned to the same church and enjoyed a great teaching on 2 Peter's call to regard scripture as reliable and inspired by God. Following a restful afternoon, we finished the week off with a mini worship night playing guitar and singing together then small group Bible study.

Another incredible week of watching the students get more comfortable with each other and the locals as they earn trust, build deep bonds, and share the love of God and truth of His word to ministry sites. We are so proud of them and so grateful for all the support!

WEEK 3 UPDATE‼️

Hard we believe we are 3 weeks into the semester but we are celebrating another amazing week here in the DR with the Fall 2026 Climb class!

On Monday, we returned to Emmanuel House for our first full day of serving at the school. All morning and into the afternoon, the students served in the classrooms with the students helping the teachers. They were divided into preschool, kindergarten, younger special needs classes, and an older class to teach English. The students worked so hard to teach, assist teachers with the kids, and bring the energy to the classrooms and recess and eventually take the lunches to the classrooms. It is always a humbling experience to work with kids for hours in the heat and the students always leave exhausted but with a deeper sense of respect and admiration for the teachers who do this all day, all week, often without pay. It makes us more inspired to serve with energy and help them to be able to rest during our time there.

On Tuesday, we had a full class day. In the morning Spanish class, we review present tense and indicative mode and introduced past tense preterite. We conjugated some regular and irregular verbs and got a long list of faith orientated vocabulary to expand their knowledge as they read scripture and share at ministry sites. In the afternoon, the students dove into the book of Matthew and began to look at the culture and context at the time of the original audience and analyze the importance of understanding words and intent in the scriptures.

On Wednesday, we had a long day of ministry. In the morning, we went to Lily House to work on more labor projects. We started off attaching an overgrown plant to a wall with metal wire to create more space, then the students cleared out a patio area filled with garbage and weeds. They worked very hard, then joined the English class with the lily house girls where they practiced the questions we had learned and did some vocabulary review with charades. In the afternoon, we went to Pasitos to continue with our Bible verse teaching and English classes. The students divided into their groups and worked to teach more conversational questions then body parts and action verbs. We ended in a competition then a little party to celebrate Juliette's birthday! Afterwards, we got pizza and ice cream to celebrate the birthday girl!

On Thursday, we had another full day of classes. In Spanish class, we reviewed preterite tense and the students wrote an entire paragraph in the past tense about their last week. Then, we did an exhaustive list of vocabulary on numbers, date, days of the week, months of the year, holidays, and directional words. In Bible class, they continued to set the scene for the gospels with more tools when reading so that they are more equipped to dive deeper into the text and ask questions to better understand. Thursday night, we had a collective game night with the host family and had a blast playing games and partaking in Nerf battles!

On Friday, we had a free day to relax after a long week of hard work for the students to catch up on rest and homework. We did some review for Spanish and prepared to go into the weekend.

On Saturday, we visited two ministry sites. We went to Village 14, a Haitian sugar cane village where we partner with a beautiful community of believers at a church to teach some of the kids and youth in the community. We split into two groups of older and younger kids and presented the Genesis story of creation and the Fall. We made it interactive and fun for the little ones and more profound with the older kids as the students took part in teaching, reading, and asking reflection questions based on the text. Afterwards, we went to Consuelo to teach a lesson at the local kids ministry where our students acted out the story of Lazarus and how we see Jesus's humane compassion for when we suffer as well as his power over death. The students bring such great passion into teaching and energy into connecting with the kids.

On Sunday, we attended another new church where there was electronic translation available for some of the students to be able to have the sermon interpreted. The students loved the service and look forward to returning! Afterwards, we had our sabbath rest day before small group where Sarah shared about the power and beauty of spiritual gifts.

Another amazing week of getting more and more acclimated with each other and the local friends we partner with to serve, teach, and learn from. Stay tuned for next weeks update!!

WEEK 2 RECAP‼️

We have completed our second full week of our Fall 2026 semester and are off to an amazing start to these 16 weeks!

On Monday, we had ministry plans cancelled due to the rain so had a full homework, crash course study day. We did some Spanish lessons and review, students got ahead on school work for the week, and the night ended with a movie night all together!

On Tuesday, we had a full class day with Spanish class in the morning where we continued to review present tense, learned a new tense, and reviewed some verbs and more vocabulary. The students are all taking in a lot of information but doing fantastic to practice and apply all they learn! In Bible class, they set the schedule for their readings and study this semester and began to dive into why context, culture, original audience and authors intent are important as we read scripture. In the evening, the students continued their daily routine of trips to the beach!

On Wednesday, we had a full ministry day and set new records for sweating! In the morning, we headed to Lily House up the road to begin our work with them. They needed some work done on the walls surrounding their group home so the students spend several hours in the heat chipping away old paint and painting walls and ceilings. We were so impressed with their work and their effort was such a blessing to the ministry. It's amazing what 10 hard working students will do this semester. In the afternoon, we headed to the girls orphanage, Pasitos, where we continue to build relationships with the girls and teach English. We split into three groups with the girls and the students all lead lessons on a bible verse, basic questions, and some vocabulary categories. The students pushed themselves with their Spanish and leading abilities and absolutely thrived! The girls loved it and learned a lot! It was an exhausting but thoroughly fulfilling day!

On Thursday, we had another class day! In Spanish class, we translated a Spanish worship song, we reviewed our new tense, studied a new common verb, and added onto our list of common vocab words. In Bible class, they started talking context for the gospel of Matthew and got into a great conversation on translating the Bible and the importance of analyzing and understanding the original text. They are going to gain so many skills in this course!

On Friday, we headed to Quiskeya to be introduced to Hogar Emmanuel, a ministry and school home to 320 students from the area. We met the director and heard her powerful testimony of Gods faithfulness in her life and how He has blessed and grown the school to receive so many children with special needs or challenging home lives so they can receive an education, meals, and biblical teaching. We got to visit the classrooms to meet the kids and deliver food to the rooms.

On Saturday, our plan for ministry was yet again cancelled due to the rain and we were unable to make it out to a village. So we took a last minute fun trip to the capital where we all had a super fun day touring the Zona Colonial, stopping in shopping, having a picnic but the sea, and practicing our bargaining skills at a market. It was a great day together seeing more of this country and bonding.

On Sunday, we headed to a partner church and Consuelo for Sunday service and some of our students got the last minute opportunity to sing a worship song and be a part of the service! We had a rest/ homework day and will finish the week with small group.

This group has been fantastic, working hard to serve with such love and joy while learning so much and pouring into each other. Stay tuned to see what else we are up to this coming week!

WEEK 1 UPDATE‼️

This last weekend, all 10 of our Fall 2026 Climb students arrived safely to the Dominican Republic to kick off this 16 week semester! Take a look at what the first week in the DR looked like for us:

On Sunday, we all went to church together at a local pastor friends church and the students got their first exposure to Dominican Church and being pretty lost during the sermon. Although overwhelming, they will all grow so much in their knowledge and retention of Spanish! In the afternoon we took a tour of campus, the surrounding area, and the beach before we had Climb orientation to lay out the expectations and experiences of this semester.

On Monday, we headed to San Jose to where our Bible professor lives with his family. Dr. McClure has lived in the Dominican Republic for the last 17 years and has dedicated his life to building a church and making disciples in his community, helping other churches and pastors plant churches, teaching about missions and the Bible all over the world, and writing his own work. We are very lucky to have him guide us this semester through what is global missions and a college course on biblical hermeneutics throughout the four gospels. The students spent the afternoon with him getting to hear about his life, his ministry, and an introduction to what a missionary is and what our call as believers is.

On Tuesday, we headed back out to San Jose in the morning for an entire morning and afternoon of continued teaching from Dr. McClure. He laid out an extremely elaborate presentation of the gospel to display Gods existence pre-creation, the creation of mankind and our purpose, the fall of man, and the plan for salvation. He challenges students to challenge their own preconceived notions and beliefs about what they have known or believed to make them into better thinkers and readers of the Bible and find the truth of God in His word. We wrapped up with some cultural training about cross cultural ministry and specifically cultural aspects they will experience living in the Dominican Republic. It was a great way to kick off training before starting!

On Wednesday, we started our ministry with two sites! In the morning, we headed up the road to Lily House to meet the girls and get to know the ministry. The students helped to teach a brief lesson on the Good Samaritan and then interacted with the girls, practicing some Spanish. Then, we participated in a fun scavenger hunt partnered with them. In the afternoon, we headed to Pasitos to meet the girls at the girls orphanage. We arrived and got to know them which very quickly turned into playing and dancing. We briefly organized a time to learn names and get to know them and the students have a lot of names to learn!

On Thursday, we had our first full day off classes and packed in two Spanish classes. We are started off very basic to review a lot and moving slow but soon will gain more memory of previous knowledge and confidence to speak comfortably.

On Friday, we had a fun excursion day together to get out and get to know each other and see more of Santo Domingo. We went to the Zoo and had a blast walking around and seeing some peculiar animals. Then, we headed to the mall for the students to get some already craved American fast food. It was great to spend the day together and we had a blast!

On Saturday morning, the students Spanish professor came and spent time with them sharing about his life and giving encouragement on the importance of learning Spanish, applied to our lives and calling as believers. We are so fortunate to have such gifted and faithful professors. In the afternoon, we went to Consuelo to partner with a church to assist with the kids ministry. The students did AMAZING, as they helped be the houses for a teaching on Matthew 7, brought the energy for the kids, assisted with crafts, and overall did a great job connecting and teaching.

Today, we went to church together and have had a sabbath day of rest, some beach time, some hanging out together, some homework, and getting ready for our first small group.

CLIMB IS BACK‼️

Our Fall 2026 class of students is here and we are already kicking off the semester with 10 students from 7 different states ready to start their 16 weeks of learning Spanish, experiencing a new culture, expanding their worldview and biblical knowledge, growing in their faith, and using their gifts to serve in ministry.

Please be praying for these students as we kick off this new experience for them that their lives can be transformed, their minds can be renewed, their gifts and experiences can be put to use, and the love of God can be seen in them and through them.
