“I am Neveen Al Saeed a Forensic Linguist”
Dr. Neveen Al Saeed
In episode 3 of DELL Talks, Dr. Neveen Al Saeed introduced us to the recent field of forensic linguistics. In addition, she told us when and where it can be applied.
Many students, as well as numerous individuals, have never heard of forensic linguistics because it is a relatively new and specialized field, not widely researched, especially in the Middle Eastern countries where the concept of applying linguistics to criminal investigations is still emerging. However, Dr. Neveen has chosen to challenge the traditional norms and go against the usual flow. She selected forensic linguistics as the focus of her PhD, a decision that may stem from her interest in how language can be used to solve real-world problems. Believing that "flexibility is key," she skillfully forged a path that few have walked before her in the Middle East. In court, forensic linguists are often called upon as knowledgeable expert witnesses, providing critical insights into how language can be manipulated or misinterpreted and helping prosecutors interrogate critical witnesses and potential suspects effectively, ensuring justice is served. Dr. Neveen’s work in forensic linguistics is a significant step toward promoting this innovative field to Egypt, where it has long been considered a taboo. Her efforts are helping to break cultural barriers and pave the way for the acceptance and growth of this important discipline in the region.
To learn more about Dr. Neveen’s passion for forensic linguistics and about her journey of earning a PhD in England, listen to episode 3 of DELL Talks, available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Anghami.
