The Saint Mark Foundation for Documenting Coptic Heritage is a non-profit organization under Egyptian law, dedicated to the documentation of Coptic Heritage and to supporting research work in the field of Coptic studies. Its activities include sponsoring projects for the documentation and digitization of the Coptic heritage, publishing academic & re

ference publications in both English and Arabic, organizing biannual international symposia, and an annual program of workshops. The Foundation’s activities benefit and bring together International & Egyptian researchers, clergy as well as the general public. The Foundation is managed by a board of trustees headed by H.H. Pope Tawadros II, and enjoys his continuous patronage of its activities. History:

The Foundation was established in 1998 by the late Dr. Fawzi Estefanos and a distinct group of professors and patrons of Coptic heritage, naming: Dr. Gawdat Gabra, Dr. Hoda Iskandar, Dr. Younan Labib Rizk, Dr. Suleiman Naseem, Dr. William Suleiman Kalada, Mr. Fahim Wassef. At the founding time, its name was the St. Mark Foundation for Coptic History Studies. It has received the blessings of the Triangle of Mercy, Pope Shenouda III, who granted it quarters in the building of the Institute of Coptic Studies in Anba Reweiss, later on it was honored by presidency of H.H. Pope Tawadros II. His Holiness has also granted it additional quarters in the cathedral premises. Moreover, Pope Tawadros has privileged it with a Papal Decree commissioning the foundation with several missions for the conservation of Coptic Heritage. Papal Decree no 12 for 2019

Commissioning St. Mark Foundation for Coptic Heritage to form a “ Scientific Unit for Coptic Heritage Conservation” to attend to all its aspects, prepare generations of highly competent research cadres to study, protect and conserve the elements of this heritage and make it available to serve the academics, researchers, and all those concerned with these studies. The Foundation has three work programs:
Coptic Studies Program
Its aim is to support researchers in the field of Coptic Studies through organizing symposia, workshops, and publishing academic researches, as well as producing publications in English & Arabic in the fields of Coptic history and civilization
• Heritage Documentation and Preservation Program
The program works on documenting Coptic heritage elements and availing them on advanced databases, and disseminating the knowledge necessary for heritage conservation.
•Public Outreach Program:
It is concerned with raising awareness of the multi facets of Coptic civilization and presenting it in attractive contemporary forms that address the various age groups and social segments. Over the course of 25 years, the foundation has established its impact through a wide scope of activities:

International Symposia: The foundation organizes biannual international symposia in topics related to the Coptic studies, where high-ranking scholars from around the world present their researches. The proceedings of the first 8 of these symposia were published in cooperation with the American University in Cairo. Workshops: In addition a series of specialized workshops and courses in fields of Coptic Civilization are continuously offered. Forums for junior researchers: In order to familiarize them with the latest research methods a biannual series of forums called “The Legacy of the Grandparents in the Eyes of the Grandchildren” is organized and its research papers are published. Documenting Coptic Heritage Sites: An ongoing program of photographing Coptic Heritage sites, has succeeded in compiling a rich database for more than 40 sites. .Some sites are presented in photography books freely available on the foundation’s website. Publications:
Up till October 2022, the Foundation has issued 25 Arabic and English publications:
• “Christianity &Monasticism” series of 8 volumes in English, published in cooperation with the American University in Cairo press, each volume is concerned with the History of Christianity and Monasticism in one of Egypt’s regions: Fayoum, Upper Egypt in two parts, Wadi El-Natrun, Aswan and Nubia, Central Egypt, Northern Egypt, Alexandria, and Western Desert.

• The American University also participated in publishing two books in English, “Coptic Civilization” and “Two Thousand Years of Coptic Christianity”.

•An Arabic series in 6 volumes on the history of Christianity and in the Egyptian dioceses covering Aswan and Nubia, the five western cities, Sohag and Akhmim, Naqada, Qus, Esna, Armant, Giza, Assiut

• A series of works of the Young Researchers Forum, of which two volumes have been published

• Various Historical books in Arabic & English: The Calendars- Astronomically & Archaeologically, a volume on St. Mark, The heritage of Coptic literature, The History of the Coptic Nation, Women in Late Antique Egypt, New Testament scenes in Coptic Monasteries.


مؤسسة "سان مارك" لتوثيق التراث هي مؤسسة غير هادفة للربح. رسالتها توثيق التراث القبطي، ودعم الأعمال العلميّة الأكاديميّة والبحثية والباحثين في مجال الدراسات القبطية. بواسطة أنشطة الدراسات والتوثيق والحفظ والنشر العلمي، وتوفير المصادر الموثقة وقواعد البيانات اللازمة لذلك.
وتتشرف المؤسسة برئاسة قداسة البابا تواضروس الثاني لمجلس أمنائها، ورعايته لها وتفضله بمنحها مقرًا بالكاتدرائية.
التاريخ:
تأسست المؤسسة عام ١٩٩٨م، على يد المتنيح الدكتور فوزي إسطفانوس ومجموعة من الأراخنة والأساتذة المهتمين بالتراث القبطي، وهم: د. جودت جبرة، د. هدى اسكندر، د. يونان لبيب رزق، د. سليمان نسيم، د. وليم سليمان قلادة، م. فهيم واصف. وكان اسمها عند التأسيس مؤسسة "القديس مرقس لدراسات التاريخ القبطيّ."
وقد حظيت باهتمام ورعاية مثلث الرحمات البابا شنوده الثالث حيث أعطاها مكانًا في مبنى معهد الدراسات القبطية بالأنبا رويس ومنحها طرس بركة. ثم شَرُفَت من بعده برعاية واهتمام قداسة البابا تواضروس الثاني ورئاسته لمجلس أمنائها وقد تفضل قداسته بمنحها مقرًا إضافيًا بنفس المبنى.
وفي عام 2019 صدر القرار البابوي التالي :
تكليف مؤسسة سان مارك للتاريخ القبطي بإنشاء «وحدة علمية لحفظ التراث القبطي» تعتني بكل نوعياته، مع إعداد كوادر دراسية على مستوى علمي متخصص في دراسة وصيانة وحفظ مقتنيات هذا التراث، وتأهيله لخدمة العلماء والباحثين والمهتمين بمثل هذه الدراسات. ويكون مجلس إدارة المؤسسة مسئولاً عن هذه الوحدة العلمية ماليًا وإداريًا.

محاور العمل:
 برنامج الدراسات القبطية
يهدف إلى دعم الكوادر الدراسية ونشر الدراسات العلمية في مجالات التاريخ والحضارة القبطية.
 برنامج توثيق وحفظ التراث
يعمل على توثيق التراث وتوفير أدوات قواعد البيانات الحديثة ونشر العلم والثقافة اللازمين لحفظه وصيانته.
 برنامج نشر الثقافة القبطية
يعتني برفع الوعي بأوجه الحضارة القبطية عن طريق إتاحة المعلومات المبسطة وإعداد المواد والأنشطة المناسبة وإتاحتها عبر أدوات التواصل المجتمعي كجزء أساسي من الميراث الحضاري المصري الكبير لنتمكن من تقديم تراثنا بأشكال معاصرة جذابة تخاطب الفئات والشرائح المجتمعية المتعددة.
وقد قدمت المؤسسة خلال مسيرتها وعلى مدى 25 عامًا مخرجات علمية يمكن إيجازها كالتالي:
المؤتمرات الدولية: فقد نُظمت العديد من المؤتمرات الدولية لمناقشة موضوعات تخص التراث القبطي بحضور قامات علمية رفيعة من مختلف أنحاء العالم، وقامت بنشر أعمال هذه المؤتمرات بالتعاون مع الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة.
ورش عمل: هذا بالإضافة إلى مجموعة من ورش العمل و الكورسات المُتخصصة فى مناحى الحضارة القبطية.
ملتقيات لشباب الباحثين: تهتم المؤسسة بشباب الباحثين لرفع كفاءتهم وإحاطتهم بأحدث أساليب البحث في العالم، ولذا فإنها تُنظِّم في هذا النحو سلسلة من المُلتقيات الدوريّة تسمى "تراث الأجداد في عيون الأحفاد" وتنشر أوراقها البحثيّة في السلسلة الخاصة بملتقيات الشباب
توثيق مواقع التراث القبطي: وفي إطار جهودها لتوثيق وتسجيل جميع أديرة والكنائس القبطية الأرثوذكسية في جميع أنحاء مصر، قامت بتصوير العديد من المواقع في جميع أنحاء البلاد منذ عام 2013 ، وبعض هذه المواقع تم عرضها في شكل كتب على موقع المؤسسة الإلكتروني.

صدر عن المؤسسة العديد من الإصدارات بالعربية والإنجليزية:
 سلسلة "Christianity & Monasticism" باللغة الإنجليزية بالتعاون مع دار نشر الجامعة الأمريكية بالقاهرة واختصت بنشر أوراق المؤتمر الدولي المعني بتاريخ المسيحية والرهبنة في منطقة من مناطق مصر (الفيوم، الصعيد في جزئين، وادي النطرون، أسوان والنوبة، مصر الوسطى، شمال مصر، الإسكندرية والصحراء الغربية).
 سلسلة عن "تاريخ المسيحية وآثارها في الإيبارشيات المصرية" غطت أسوان والنوبة، الخمس مدن الغربية، سوهاج وإخميم، نقادة وقوص وإسنا وأرمنت أرمنت، الجيزة، أسيوط.
 سلسلة أعمال ملتقى شباب الباحثين.

التراث القبطي البهيّ العريق ، حاضراً و متمثلاً بقوة أمام الوفود العالمية اليوم من خلال معرض "صور من التراث القبطي " - الذى أقامته مؤسسة سان مارك لتوثيق التراث - بالبهو الرئيسى لقاعة افتتاح المؤتمر السادس للجنة الإيمان والنظام التابعة لمجلس الكنائس العالمي ، بمركز لوجوس البابوى اليوم، ٢٥ أكتوبر ٢٠٢٥.

الصور المعروضة من الأديرة و الكنائس القديمة، وهى من الأرشيف الفوتوغرافى للمؤسسة وأحد مشروعاتها الدائمة لتوثيق التراث القبطي.

The splendid Coptic heritage is vividly and powerfully represented before international delegations today through the exhibition "Images from Coptic Heritage", organized by the St. Mark Foundation, in the lobby of the opening venue of the Sixth Conference of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches, held at the Logos Papal Center today, October 25, 2025.

The photographs on display are from ancient monasteries and churches, drawn from the foundation’s photographic archive — one of its ongoing projects dedicated to documenting Coptic heritage.

Grains Gathered into One Loaf:
The Eucharist as the Ontological Heart of Coptic Liturgy and Monasticism

The Eucharist serves as the ontological heart of Coptic liturgy and monasticism. This paper emphasizes the role of the Eucharist as the “Mystery of Synaxis,” which defines the Church’s identity. Drawing on biblical texts, early and received liturgical prayers, as well as monastic literature, the study highlights how the Eucharist embodies the concept of ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό —gathering the faithful in one place, with one mind, as one body in Christ. The study traces this assembling and unifying character demonstrating its centrality in the communal lives of the early Egyptian monastic communities. The Eucharist is not an individualistic act but a communal mystery; the paper underscores its mystical and assembling dimensions. Thus, the Church makes the Eucharist and the Eucharist makes the Church.

تُعتبر الإفخارستيا القلب الأنطولوجي لليتورجيا القبطية والرهبنة. تُبرز هذه الورقة البحثية دور الإفخارستيا كسِر "السيناكسيس " الذي يُعرَّف هوية الكنيسة. بالاعتماد على النصوص الكتابية، والصلوات الليتورجية المبكرة والمٌسْتَلمة، والأدبيات الرهبانية، يٌسلط البحث الضوء على كيفية تجسيد الإفخارستيا ال — ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό :جمع المؤمنين في مكان واحد، بعقل واحد، وكجسد واحد في المسيح. تَتَّبع الدراسة هذا الطابع الجماعي مُظهرةً مركزية الإفخارستيا في الحياة الجماعية للرهبنات المصرية المبكرة. يتضح لنا أن الإفخارستيا ليست عملاً فردياً، بل هي سر جماعي، يتأكد أبعاده السرائرية والجماعية. وهكذا، تقيم الكنيسة الإفخارستيا، وتقيم الإفخارستيا الكنيسة.

Barnabas el Maqari is a monk at the Monastery of Saint Macarius the Great and was tonsured in 2015 by the late Bishop Epiphanius. He is pursuing an M.T.S at AHOS, Antiochian House of Studies. He dedicates his time to translating the rich Arabic literature of Father Matthew the Poor into English. The latest translation he participated in is The Church Immortal and The Mystery of Unity by Father Matthew the Poor, both set to be published by St. Macarius Press, where he serves as one of the two editors-in-chief.

Apophthegmata Patrum is a collection of the sayings of the fathers of the deserts of Egypt (4th to 6th century). This text mainly contains the principles and wisdom stories which were describing the spirituality in early Christianity. This research discusses the liturgical allusions based on the Coptic and Greek AP. However, this study describes quotations apart from my PhD thesis 2024

How does the liturgical Life of the Church Emerge from the Womb of its Ecclesiastical Canons?

The liturgical heritage of any church cannot be separated from its legal heritage because the church's legal heritage directs the identity of its liturgical heritage. The liturgical and legal heritage of any church cannot, in any way, be separated from its patristic heritage. This is because the liturgical heritage of any church is a branch of its patristic heritage, and the same applies to the legal heritage of any church, which is also a branch of its patristic heritage. In this research paper, I have provided seven examples illustrating how the liturgical life of the Church of Alexandria was born from the womb of its ecclesiastical law.

Access to and participation in the Eucharist traditionally occur within corporate ecclesial spaces. Celebrations of the Divine Liturgy, culminating in the reception of communion, have varied in frequency across different eras and regions of Egypt, reflecting diverse practices of eucharistic participation. However, receiving the mysteries extends beyond public church settings and was not always directly tied to the prayers of the Anaphora at the time of reception. Drawing on evidence from Egyptian Christian traditions spanning antiquity to the late medieval period, this paper examines the various contexts in which communion was received outside a corporate church setting, both within the framework of a Divine Liturgy and independently, emphasizing the widespread practice of private communion in the Alexandrian Tradition.

The Relationship between Extant Bohairic Euchologia:
The Case Study of Hunt. 360 and BnF Copt. 31

There is a large number of manuscripts of the Bohairic Euchologion (the Coptic book of the Divine Liturgies) preserved in numerous collections in Egypt and abroad. These manuscripts exceed 400 witnesses worldwide, dating from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries. Most of these samples have never been studied or published adequately, with very few exceptions. At first glance, manuscripts of the Euchologion have much in common with one another and with the printed editions used in the Coptic Church; Yet, a closer look at many of these Euchologia reveals subtle but important differences among them on several levels. In this presentation, I discuss a few such differences, using two particular Euchologia manuscripts as a case study. These two Euchologia are the thirteenth-century Oxford, Bodleian Hunt. 360 and the fifteenth-century Euchologion Paris, BnF Copt. 31. This comparison will serve as a useful example of the value of studying individual Bohairic Euchologia and how such analysis can reveal previously unknown relationships between the extant witnesses of the Coptic book of the Liturgies.

Arsenius Mikhail is Professor of Liturgical Studies at St. Athanasius & St. Cyril Coptic Theological School in Newport Beach, California, a Visiting Professor at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome, and a researcher at the University of Regensburg, where he is the principal investigator of the project Digital Catalogue and Historical Analysis of Manuscripts of the Coptic Euchologion funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). He is a specialist of Coptic liturgical history and the author of several monographs and articles, including The Presentation of the Lamb (Aschendorff, 2020), Guides to the Eucharist in Medieval Egypt (Fordham University Press, 2022), and Analecta Hymnica Coptica (Peeters, 2023).

Liturgical ceremonies such as the Eucharist and baptism take place in spaces that are specially designed and decorated for that purpose. The painted decoration in churches and baptisteries is inspired by the symbolic meaning of these spaces as well as by the rituals that take place there. Space, decoration, and function interact. In the past twenty-five years, several studies have focused on the interplay of architecture, decoration and Eucharist. This contribution will center on the baptistery, wall paintings and the baptismal rite, and especially in the baptistery of the quarry church of Dayr Abu Hinnis (Middle Egypt, sixth-eighth century).

Gertrud J.M. van Loon KU Leuven (Catholic University Leuven, Belgium) Art historian, specialized in Christian wall painting in Egypt. She has studied and received her PhD at Leiden University (The Gate of Heaven. Wall paintings with Old Testament scenes in the altar room and the ẖūrus of Coptic churches, Leiden 1999). She works, among other projects, in Dayr Abu Hinnis, a monastic settlement in pharaonic quarries (Middle Egypt, with KU Leuven) and in Dayr Anba Hadra near Aswan (with FU Berlin/Deutsches Archäologisches Institut in Cairo). Since 2018, her research project at the University of Warsaw (with Dobrochna Zielińska and Adam Łajtar) studies the decorated church interiors in Southern Egypt and Northern Nubia from the viewpoint of both traditions, Egyptian and Nubian.

Coptic liturgical objects include many types of tools, instruments, and vessels used in the Coptic liturgy, such as Altar tools, which include the Chalice, the Paten, the Asterisk (Dome or Star), the Spoon (Mystir), the Censer, the Liturgical Fans, the Ark or Throne (of the Chalice), and even the Basin and Ewer. They also include musical instruments such as cymbals and triangles. These Coptic liturgical objects have evolved over centuries. Such evolution can reflect the liturgical, cultural and economic developments of the Coptic Community in Egypt. The Altar tools materials, such as that of the chalice and paten, have transitioned from pottery to wood to glass to more durable substances like silver and gold, reflecting both practical and economic considerations.This research deals with a new publication of a group of altar tools that were found buried under the ruins of some of the sanctuaries and churches at St. Macarius Monastery in Wadi El Natrun. Publishing such a group could help researchers study the historical and liturgical development of the Coptic Altar tools.

Makari al-Maqari a monk at the St. Macarius monastery, Wadi El-Natrun, Egypt; responsible for archaeological affairs and director of the Church Artifacts Restoration Unit. He is a former antiquities inspector and museum curator at the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. He has a Master’s of Egyptology from the Faculty of Arts, Helwan University, and a Diploma in Cultural Heritage Management from CNR Italy. He is a member of the Egyptian Heritage Risk Team. He has participated in many international conferences and has many published researches in the fields of Coptology and culture heritage management.

The Presanctified Liturgy in the Alexandrian Liturgical Tradition

In the Alexandrian Liturgical tradition, there are two Presanctified Liturgies: 1. Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts of St. Mark, and 2. Liturgy of the Sanctification of the Holy Chalice. These two Liturgies were both used till the eleventh century. After the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria followed the Byzantine tradition, the Liturgy of St. Mark was only used in the Alexandrian Coptic Orthodox Church in a Coptic Bohairic translation. At the age of Pope Christodoulos (1046-1077), the 66th Pope and Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church, the use of the “Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts” was stopped. But, it was only used upon need under the name of “Liturgy of the Sanctification of the Holy Chalice”. In the liturgical tradition of the Coptic Church, the rite of Blessing the holy Chalice is performed for many reasons and needs. The purpose of this research in general is a thorough presentation of the historical and liturgical data concerning the liturgical tradition of the Progiazmini (the Presanctified Gifts) in the Alexandrian liturgical tradition.

Roshdi W.B. Dous is the Patriarchal Archdeacon of St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Cathedral and head of the Department of Worship & Liturgy of the Coptic Orthodox Theological & Clerical College. He is a prolific scholar of the Alexandrian Liturgical tradition with several important contributions. He completed three doctoral dissertations at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The first was under the direction of the renowned Prof. Ioannes Fountoulis on the Greek version of the Liturgy of St. Basil (1998). The second and third were completed in 2014 and 2020 under the direction of Prof. Panagiotis Skaltsis on the topics of the Sanctification of the Nile and the Alexandrian Presanctified Liturgy.
