“My hands shook as I went through my act at terrific speed.”

The Book Fairies of the UK have been busy sharing copies of White Male Stand Up by Alan Davies across the UK today! Who was lucky enough to spot one?

About the book:

It’s the story of how he threw himself into the joyous and idealistic world of stand-up comedy, leading to a television career, but how echoes from the past, and the thought that everyone might prefer it if he disappeared, saw him repeatedly dismantle everything around him.

With a cast of well-known comedians, actors, agents and producers, Alan awkwardly navigates his life from the camaraderie of the comedy circuit via life-changing fame as TV’s Jonathan Creek, to the unwelcome realisation that most people know him from a bank advert and think he’s had a perm. Often very funny and always honest, this very personal memoir is a rich tale of uplifting highs and painful lows, of success and excess, and the dangers of both. How Alan Davies survived it - and very nearly didn’t - is the compelling tale of White Male Stand Up.

It’s June and the start of our season! We’d love for as many fairies to join in. Pop a Pride sticker on a book, maybe add a little rainbow ribbon, and hide it for a lucky finder 🌈

Another great way to celebrate is to share a pic of one of your favourite Pride related books, and maybe do a post!

“The pond is waiting, as it always is.”

The Book Fairies of the UK have been busy sharing copies of Brave and Bold by Nell Frizzell at swimming spots and more!

Who was BRAVE enough to go looking, and BOLD enough to take one home? 🏊‍♂️🏊🏊‍♀️

About the book:

For a century, the Ladies’ Pond on Hampstead Heath has welcomed women from every walk of life: artists and activists, swimmers and sunbathers, friends and free spirits. As Britain’s most famous female open-air swimming spot, a pocket of wildness tucked away in the middle of the city, it has long attracted adventurous swimmers from all over the UK and the wider world.
Brave and Bold celebrates one hundred years of this beloved London landmark through the rhythm of a single swimming year, from frozen Januarys to sun-drenched midsummers; through friendships, feminist activism and the exhilaration of open water.

Created in collaboration with the Kenwood Ladies’ Pond Association and rich with previously unseen archive material and new interviews – from Dolly Alderton and Amy Liptrot to lifelong swimmers of every era – this is far more than the story of one pond. It’s a story of community, women and wild water across a century of social and political change, from suffragettes to soap stars, war to liberation, and shared flasks of tea to acts of quiet rebellion.

“Maybe one day I will tell you, but for now I write to say I have settled in London…”

The Book Fairies of London UK have been busy celebrating various spots along the Windrush Line today, sharing copies of Smallie by Eden-Mckenzie Goddard along the way! There is one very important place included that is NOT near that line… can you spot it? And the 🐈 too??

Summer 2023 was the 75th anniversary of HMT Empire Windrush docking in Britain. Many of those who arrived spent their first months in lodgings underneath Clapham South tube station before settling in the borough. In 2024 this line of the Overground was renamed “to properly honour the Windrush generation and their descendants who have contributed so much to making London the place it is today” - Lambeth Council deputy leader Cllr Rezina Chowdhury.

About the book:

In 1961, nineteen-year-old Lucinda Brown travels to England in search of her son’s father, Clarence Braithwaite, who left Barbados to join the British army. But aboard the ship to Southampton she meets a man named Raldo who offers her a glimpse of a new life, a freer life.

Bound by the memory of her son waiting at home, she chooses Clarence – realizing too late that war has made a stranger out of him.

Nearly fifty years later, Lucinda receives a letter from the Home Office that threatens to tear her world apart. Her children rally together to prove her legal arrival, and to do so they must track down an elusive man from her past, a man she wanted to love but instead lost, a man who now holds the key to her family’s future. Raldo…

An exhilarating and expansive tale of a family thrown into collision with the Windrush scandal, Smallie shows just how easily the past can spill into our lives, even when – especially when – we think we’ve closed the door on it.
