A new peer-reviewed article has been published in the Journal of Working-Class Studies: How Universal Basic Income (UBI) Can Empower the Working Class Through Improved Wage Negotiation and Poverty Alleviation. Co-authored by Hefin Gwilym, Bangor University, David Beck, University of Salford, and Nghiêm Phương Anh, a former Bangor postgraduate taught student, the article examines how Universal Basic Income can strengthen workers' bargaining power, reduce poverty and inequality, and enhance economic security for working-class communities. Er bod y daith yn un hir, roedd hi'n sicr yn werth pob milltir. Roedd yn bleser cael y cyfle i drafod y ddarpariaeth Cymdeithaseg a Throseddeg yn Bangor University gyda'r disgyblion.

It was a long journey to get there, but it was definitely worth every mile. It was great to have the opportunity to discuss Sociology and Criminology provision at Bangor University with pupils.

Heddiw fe wnaeth Dr Cynog Prys ymweld ag Ysgol Bro Tawe (Abertawe) i drafod Cymdeithaseg gyda'r disgyblion. Roedd hi'n sesiwn fywiog yn trafod pwy sydd â phŵer mewn cymdeithas – o lywodraethau a'r cyfryngau i gwmnïau technoleg ac AI, a'r ffordd maen nhw'n dylanwadu ar ein bywydau bob dydd.

📚✨ Diwrnod gwych gyda disgyblion y Rhwydwaith Seren! / A great day with Seren Network students! ✨📚

Heddiw bu Dr Cynog Prys yn ymweld ag Ysgol Morgan Llwyd yn Wrecsam i gymryd rhan mewn gweithgareddau Rhwydwaith Seren.

"Deall Pobl a Phŵer" oedd teitl y sesiwn ddwbl, ac roedd yn wych cael trafod Cymdeithaseg gyda chymaint o ddisgyblion brwdfrydig o bob rhan o ogledd Cymru.

Buom yn trafod gyrfaoedd posibl, gwerth y Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol i gymdeithas, a manteision astudio drwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg fel ased cyflogadwyedd pwysig yn y farchnad swyddi gyfoes.

Diolch yn fawr i'r Rhwydwaith Seren am y gwahoddiad! 👏.............................

Today, Dr Cynog Prys visited Ysgol Morgan Llwyd in Wrecsam to take part in activities organised by the Rhwydwaith Seren.

The double session, "Understanding People and Power", provided an excellent opportunity to discuss Sociology with enthusiastic students from across North Wales.

We explored potential career pathways, the value of the Social Sciences to society, and the advantages of studying through the medium of Welsh as an important employability asset.

Queuing
What is sociological about queuing?
This is the topic of discussion by Dr Rhian Hodges this morning on the Aled Hughes Programme. Everyone queues in some way from day to day; from queuing for a pint of milk to queuing for a doctor's appointment at the surgery to eagerly queuing to get into a Super Furry Animals gig. What about the context? Is queuing in a supermarket different from queuing in nature. But what happens if we jump the queue? There is a danger that we will break a social norm and create social anomie (chaos). Sociology helps us make sense of familiar elements within our society, elements that we often take for granted.

Braf iawn oedd bod yn rhan o Ddiwrnod Gyrfaoedd y Gyfraith ddydd Gwener yma ym Mhrifysgol Bangor. Roedd yn wych gweld cynifer o ddisgyblion o ysgolion ar draws gogledd Cymru yn bresennol, yn archwilio’r cyfleoedd niferus sydd ar gael iddynt yn y dyfodol.

Roedd hefyd yn gyfle gwych i drafod y byd **Gwyddorau Cymdeithasol** – o ddeall cymdeithas a newid cymdeithasol, i feysydd fel troseddeg, polisi, anghydraddoldeb a chyfiawnder cymdeithasol. Diolch i bawb ddaeth draw i gael sgwrs gyda ni! 🌍💬

It was fantastic to be part of the Law Careers Day at Bangor University this Friday. It was great to see so many pupils from schools across North Wales attending and exploring the many opportunities available to them.

It was also a brilliant opportunity to discuss the exciting world of **Social Sciences** – from understanding society and social change to topics such as criminology, policy, inequality and social justice. Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat! 🌍💬

Braf cael sgwrs ar raglen Aled Hughes, BBC Radio Cymru heddiw gyda Dr Cynog Prys yn trafod The Bechbretha – cyfreithiau gwenyn hynafol Iwerddon o'r 7fed a'r 8fed ganrif.

Yn ôl y cyfreithiau hyn, os oedd eich gwenyn yn crwydro, yn dwyn paill neu hyd yn oed yn anafu rhywun, gallai'r perchennog orfod talu iawndal! Y nod oedd cadw perthynas dda rhwng cymdogion a chynnal tegwch o fewn cymdeithas.

Er bod y rheolau hyn yn ymddangos yn od heddiw, maent yn ein hatgoffa bod cymdeithasau ers canrifoedd wedi bod yn chwilio am ffyrdd o ddatrys anghydfodau, adfer perthnasau a byw'n heddychlon gyda'i gilydd. Mewn sawl ffordd, mae'r syniadau hyn yn debyg iawn i egwyddorion cyfiawnder adferol heddiw.

A beth am gyfreithiau rhyfedd modern? O droseddau'n ymwneud ag "eog mewn amgylchiadau amheus" i ddirwyon am beidio â chodi baw ci – mae'r gyfraith yn dal i geisio lleihau gwrthdaro a helpu pobl i gyd-fyw!

🎙️🐝 Strange laws... or just common sense?

Great to hear Dr Cynog Prys on Aled Hughes' programme on BBC Radio Cymru today discussing The Bechbretha – ancient Irish bee laws dating from the 7th and 8th centuries.

Under these laws, if your bees wandered, stole pollen, or even injured someone, you could be required to pay compensation. The aim was to maintain good relationships between neighbours and promote fairness within society.

While these rules may seem unusual today, they remind us that societies have long sought ways to resolve disputes, repair relationships and live peacefully together. In many ways, these ideas echo modern principles of restorative justice.

And what about strange laws today? From offences involving “salmon in suspicious circumstances” to fines for failing to pick up dog mess, the law still deals with everyday issues in order to reduce conflict and help people live together.

Yr wythnos hon, croesawyd nifer o fyfyrwyr Coleg Meirion Dwyfor i Brifysgol Bangor ar gyfer Cynhadledd Chweched Dosbarth. Cynhaliwyd sesiwn benodol ym maes Gwyddorau Cymdeithas gan Dr Rhian Hodges, uwchddarlithydd Cymdeithaseg a Pholisi Cymdeithasol. Thema'r sesiwn oedd 'Pam fod Cymdeithaseg mor bwysig i'r byd?' Cynhaliwyd darlith flas ar bwysigrwydd Cymdeithaseg er mwyn datrys problemau'r byd ac yna weithdy rhyngweithiol lle gweithiodd myfyrwyr mewn grwpiau trafod i greu eu cymdeithas ddelfrydol. Cafwyd tipyn o drafodaethau diddorol, roedd yr ystafell yn llawn Cymdeithasegwyr y dyfodol! Gwaith arbennig gan bawb! Gobeithio ichi fwynhau eich cynhadledd yn y brifysgol.

This week, a number of Coleg Meirion Dwyfor students were welcomed to Bangor University for the Sixth Form Conference. A specific session was held in the field of Social Sciences by Dr Rhian Hodges, senior lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy. The theme of the session was 'Why is Sociology so important to the world?' A taster lecture was held on the importance of Sociology in order to solve the world's problems followed by an interactive workshop where students worked in discussion groups to create their ideal society. There were quite a few interesting discussions, the room was full of Sociologists of the future! Great work by everyone! I hope you enjoyed your conference at the university today.
