Welcome To Modern Plan Insulation Limited

MPI are a contracting company specialising in all aspects of Sprayed & Injected Polyurethane foams as well as high performance coatings, often used in conjunction with P.U. Foams have excellent insulation properties and the fact that they can be sprayed or injected, means there is a system for virtually every application. Systems are available with a rang

e of physical properties, predominantly closed cell rigid foams are used which are inherently waterproof. Systems are available with Class 1 & Class 0 fire ratings, as well as BBA Certification. Open cell low density so called ‘soft’ foam systems are also available for specific applications. We are approved by all the major raw materials suppliers, including BASF Polyurethanes UK for their range of BBA approved Walltite systems, Edu-Chem for their range of foam systems and Isothane Ltd for their foam insulation and coating systems including Technitherm & Duratherm, BBA approved systems. MPI have been in business in our present format since 1985. We operate a Quality System to ISO 9001 We are BBA approved installers No. 4061 and are Constructionline & Trustmark accredited and are full BUFCA members since 1986.

These CO2 storage vessels were previously insulated by MPI using injected PU foam when they were new in 2021.
Every 5 years they must be inspected to ensure there is no corrosion present.
This involves making openings in the outer shell , removing foam and the engineers measure the thickness using an Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge.
After the tests are completed MPI Ltd then re inject the openings to ensure the tanks are once again properly Insulated and can safely store the CO2 until the next routine inspection.

Retrofitting older buildings is key to hitting many local authorities decarbonisation goals, and upgrading this council office block is a great example of how it can be done right. By using Isothane Technitherm cavity wall insulation and stabilisation system, we’re not only improving thermal performance and reducing heat loss, but also strengthening the existing structure without major disruption.

This solution helps cut energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and extend the building’s lifespan — all while keeping refurbishment efficient and cost-effective. A smart step forward in turning older assets into sustainable, future-ready spaces.

For anybody with an HVAC system installed in their home or business, below are some of the reasons you may benefit from installing sprayfoam insulation.

Why spray foam insulation works so well with HVAC systems.

1️⃣ Airtightness = HVAC efficiency.
Traditional insulation slows heat transfer but doesn’t stop air movement. Spray foam does both.
Because spray foam expands and seals gaps, joints, and penetrations:
Conditioned air stays inside the buildings envelope and
uncontrolled air leakage is drastically reduced so
the HVAC system doesn’t have to constantly reheat or recool incoming air.
👉 Result: lower energy use and more stable indoor temperatures.

2️⃣ Ductwork performs as designed.
In many buildings, HVAC ducting runs through:
Roof voids
Plant rooms and
unconditioned spaces
Spray foam seals around ducts and pipe penetrations,
reduces heat loss or heat gain from ductwork and
prevents pressure losses caused by air leakage.
👉 Result: better airflow balance and improved system performance.

3️⃣ Condensation control on pipes and ducts.
Cold HVAC components + warm, moist air = condensation.
Closed-cell spray foam
acts as a vapour-resistant insulation,
keeps surfaces above the dew point and
prevents moisture forming on ducts, pipes, and metal surfaces.
👉 Result: no dripping, no corrosion, no mould growth
This is especially important in:
Commercial buildings
Plant rooms
Swimming pools
Containers and steel structures.

4️⃣ Smaller, more efficient HVAC systems.
When air leakage and thermal losses are reduced:
Heating and cooling loads drop.
Systems can be downsized.
Equipment cycles less frequently.
👉 Result: longer system life and lower capital + running costs.

5️⃣ Improved comfort & indoor air quality.
Spray foam reduces Drafts
Hot and cold spots
Humidity swings
It also limits the ingress of:
Dust
Pollutants
Moisture-laden air
👉 Result: more consistent comfort and better Indoor Air Quality.

6️⃣ Structural and durability benefits.
Closed-cell spray foam adds:
Moisture resistance
Reduced risk of interstitial condensation
Extra rigidity to lightweight structures
👉 Result: protected building fabric and fewer long-term issues around HVAC plant areas.

In simple terms
If your HVAC system is the engine, spray foam is the sealed engine bay — without it, you’re wasting energy and fighting physics.

A few photos from a small, previously uninsulated workshop where the loft space above was suffering from condensation issues.

MPI Ltd installed Class 1 fire-rated, closed-cell spray foam insulation to transform the space — making the workshop warmer and far more comfortable to work in, while also addressing the root cause of the condensation.

The result?
✔️ A drier, more stable environment
✔️ No more condensation dripping during colder months
✔️ The loft space above is now a safe, usable area for storage

A practical solution that improves comfort, protects the building, and makes better use of the space all year round.

📸 Isothane Duratherm Closed Cell Spray Foam – Condensation Control & Thermal Upgrade

This project involved the installation of Isothane Duratherm closed cell spray polyurethane foam, Class 1 fire rated, applied to the underside of a newly installed slate roof incorporating a Tyvek breather membrane.

The existing issue was interstitial and surface condensation forming on the underside of the roof structure, resulting in water dripping onto machinery below.

The insulation system was designed following a full survey and condensation risk assessment, with the applied foam thickness determined in accordance with the results of the condensation risk analysis and U-value calculations. The roof structure was confirmed to be sound and weather-tight prior to installation.

Moisture content readings were taken from all accessible roof timbers to verify that no damp or elevated moisture levels were present before works commenced. The spray foam was applied strictly to the specified areas, with both the upper and lower faces of the rafters left uncoated, allowing the timber structure to remain visible and capable of moisture diffusion in accordance with the design intent.

When installed in accordance with manufacturer guidance and calculated specifications, closed cell spray foam provides a combined thermal insulation and vapour control layer, eliminating condensation risk while achieving high levels of thermal performance.

The client received a comprehensive installation and compliance pack, including:

Isothane Duratherm KIWA BDA certification

Project-specific U-value calculations

Condensation risk analysis

25-year manufacturer’s material warranty

25-year installer workmanship warranty

This system provides a compliant, durable solution for condensation control and thermal performance when professionally specified and installed.

🧱 Closed Cell Spray Foam for Stone Barn Conversions

Closed cell spray foam insulation is an excellent solution for solid stone walls in barn conversions. It delivers high thermal performance with minimal thickness, helping retain internal space while significantly improving energy efficiency.

By expanding and bonding directly to uneven stonework, spray foam creates an airtight seal that reduces draughts and heat loss — a common issue in older buildings. Its vapour-resistant properties also help manage condensation when correctly designed, protecting the internal finish of the structure.

Additional benefits include improved acoustic performance, added rigidity to internal linings, and fast installation with fewer fixings into fragile stonework.
