Cardiff WEMS page, like it to keep up to date with events and teaching we have going on. What is WEMS? The Wilderness and Expedition Society (WEMS) is open to all healthcare and non-healthcare students. We offer exciting and educational opportunities which are very different experiences to those in a lecture theatre; the aim being to equip our members with hands on, practical teaching in the treat

ment of medical emergencies in a remote setting. This teaching is from older medical students, doctors and guest speakers, all of whom are highly enthusiastic. What other activities do we do? As well as teaching opportunities in the outdoors we also offer our members the chance to challenge themselves physically by taking part in our many events, including trips to Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia and local beaches for walking, camping, swimming and everything in between! Within WEMS strong friendships have been formed across different courses and year groups. WEMS is a welcoming and friendly society and we believe in the value of practical outdoor education, self challenge and team effort. If you are interested, come along to one of our events or weekends away and see for yourself what you can gain from WEMS! Or if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask at: [email protected] or drop us a message on instagram!

Come and join us on Sunday at 3pm for a dip in Jackson’s bay and bake sale with the Wet dippers society! Everyone is welcome to join member or not, so bring along all friends and housemates!!

All money made is going towards the Turkey Syria earthquake appeal. A voluntary donation of £3 ticket can be bought on the WEMs SU page and lots of yummy bakes will be available to buy.

On Monday 6 February, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey near the city of Gaziantep, devastating parts of Turkey and Syria and taking many lives. Donations to the appeal will help towards providing food, water and shelter, medical aid, rescue efforts and psychological support for those affected.

Look forward to seeing everyone there! Remember your layers!!! 🧤🧣

After weeks and weeks of frustration not being able to get a minibus we finally have one for this Saturday!! (11/03/23)

This means one thing for all you budding Wembers... ITS PEN Y FAN TIME!!

Pen Y Fan is an absolute must do for every Cardiff student that loves to hike and it always makes for a great WEMS day out!

It is a tougher walk than Garth Hill so make sure you come prepared and dress appropriately for the weather as it can get pretty cold, wet and windy up there.

Tickets for the minibus are now available on the SU website for members.

Can't to see you all there!!

We are lucky enough to have two members of MEDSERVE Wales, a prominent charity organisation focusing on pre-hospital care, coming to talk to us about their team. They will be covering topics including the history and work of MEDSERVE, trauma cases and an emergency medicine equipment demonstration.

One of the Founders of our very own WEMS, Tony Hanks is a Cardiff University alumni who now works as a Pre-Hospital emergency Medicine trainee at Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. He is a Senior Welsh Emergency medicine trainee, has worked for Physician Response Units in both Newport and Cardiff as well as a Clinical fellow with EMRTS and WAST. He’s built a wealth of experience he’s willing to share with us!

Joining Tony is Tim Austin, whose journey in PHEM commenced as a volunteer First Responder ultimately qualifying as a paramedic in 2012 from Staffordshire University having gained experience as a Student Paramedic with WMAS. Since qualification he has experienced several role's within the Ambulance Service: Advanced Paramedic, Joint Response Unit, Bronze Commander, Telephone Medicine to name but a few. He has also been fortunate to gain experience from working with London’s Tactical Response Unit, Toronto’s Paramedic Service, The Fire Service College and has undertaken two cycles of the EMRTS Clinical Attendant program. Currently, Tim is employed as a Senior Trauma Paramedic with WAST and volunteers as an Immediate Care Practitioner with MedServe Wales, holding accreditation with the British Association for Immediate Care (BASICS). 🚨 CALL FOR SIMULATED CASUALTIES 🚨

❗️A message on behalf of the team helping organising training exercises for emergency services in Wales.

Many of us in WEMS have helped out at these events before and they are a useful opportunity to observe how the various teams work together! Please have a read below and consider volunteering!

South Wales Emergency Services—hazardous area response paramedics, emergency response nurses and firefighters—are organising a large-scale replicated terrorist attack requiring volunteers to act as simulated casualties. No acting required, just enthusiasm!

These exercises are insightful and enjoyable events with opportunities to learn more about pre-hospital/emergency medicine.
