Did you know that if a disability, Specific Learning Difference (SpLD) or health issue (whether physical or mental) impacts your ability to study, you may qualify for additional support and resources at university?

The Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) you receive is not impacted by your household income, and you do not need to repay it like a loan.

Here are the criteria you need to meet to be eligible for the DSA:

✔️ UK resident

✔️ Undergraduate or postgraduate student on a course lasting at least a year (including part-time, Open University, and distance learning courses)

✔️ Qualify for Student Finance

✔️ Have a disability, medical condition, sensory impairment, mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty that affects your ability to study.

Do you have dyslexia?

Are you starting university in September?

You may need a DSA assessment to ensure on-going support and/or adjustments to the delivery and assessment of your course. Check with the learner support department at your university.

If you need a DSA assessment don’t wait until you get there to arrange it. The wait can take up to a whole term!

Get the ball rolling now.

Book your DSA assessment with us at Glamorgan Dyslexia Services and get your report within 5-7 days. You can send your report off to the learner support department straight away together with an application for additional funding to Student Finance Wales for everything to be in place by the time your start.

University students with dyslexia are often astonished to discover the length of time it takes for support to be put in place. After an initial assessment, they have to have a needs assessment to determine what adjustments are required, then they have to wait for Student Finance to process their application for funding, and for funding to come through, before support can be arranged. It is a often a reality that by this time, the course is well under way and some students have fallen behind with their studies, and sadly in some cases, withdrawn from the course before the support has materialised.

We are already busy with students booking assessments in preparation for the new academic year in the hope that this does not happen to them.

Glamorgan Dyslexia Services are open for business. We are able to undertake diagnostic assessments in a safe environment, in full accordance of the government's social distancing rules. A DSA report is a passport for additional funding from Student Finance Wales, to purchase recommended assisted technology to support reading, recording and note taking in lectures.
