From Brighton to the V&A๐Ÿ‘

University of Brighton alum Jess Starns is one of three residents selected for the Adobe Creative Residency at the Victoria and Albert Museum, where she is helping to reshape how we think about everyday design. ๐ŸŽจ

Her work is currently on display at the V&A as part of the residency, giving visitors the opportunity to explore ideas around disability, accessibility and inclusion through the lens of design. ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ

As part of the project, Jess has developed learning resources featuring guided prompts and classroom activities that introduce ideas around disability, accessibility and everyday design. The materials are intended to support teachers long after the exhibition has ended, helping to keep conversations about inclusion alive in classrooms. ๐Ÿ“š

Jess previously worked for more than eight years at the British Museum and was named University of Brighton Alumna of the Year in 2022 for her work supporting young people with dyspraxia. ๐Ÿ†

She credits her time studying MA Inclusive Arts Practice at Brighton with helping to shape her approach to inclusive practice. The course's emphasis on collaboration, experimentation and working closely with communities continues to influence her work today. ๐ŸŽ“

We're proud to see Jess championing accessibility, inclusive design and lived experience through this exciting residency. ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿ“ท Did you know Brighton was home to one of Britain's very first photographic studios?

A new University of Brighton research project is uncovering the story of William Constable, the pioneering photographer believed to have taken the first royal photographic portrait. ๐Ÿ‘‘

Working with the Smithsonian Institution, University of Brighton researchers have uncovered new information about 130 surviving photographs, bringing fresh attention to Brighton's place at the forefront of photographic history.

To mark his contribution to photography, a blue plaque has now been unveiled at 57 Marine Parade - the site where Constable introduced Victorians to one of the 19th century's most astonishing inventions.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Professor Annebella Pollen said: โ€œWilliam Constable played an unparalleled role in Brightonโ€™s early photographic history, but much of his story has remained untold.โ€

๐Ÿ“Pictured at the plaque unveiling (L-R): University of Brighton postgraduate researchers Sally Jones and Sylvie Jane Lewis, Professor Annebella Pollen, photographic historian Philippe Garner, and Claire Constable, William Constable's biographer and descendant.

๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿ”ฌ University of Brighton researchers are developing a pioneering new sensor that could help detect osteoarthritis before irreversible joint damage occurs -opening the door to earlier diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The 14-month project, led by Professor Katherine Staines alongside Professor Bhavik Patel and Dr Lisa Mullen, aims to identify tiny chemical changes in joint fluid linked to the earliest stages of arthritis ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌโš•๏ธ

With more than 10 million people in the UK affected by osteoarthritis, this groundbreaking research could one day transform how joint disease is diagnosed and monitored. ๐Ÿ’ก
