Staff Spotlight 💡

Meet Jo, one of the members of Clare's hardworking gardening team.

Having first joined Clare in 2021, Jo was initially drawn to the College by the opportunity to work alongside experienced gardeners and care for some of Cambridge's most beautiful gardens. After a brief period away, she returned to Clare, having missed the outdoor work and connection with nature that gardening provides. Today, she leads much of the College's propagation work, looking after the glasshouses and growing plants that will appear throughout the gardens in future seasons.

Jo takes great pride in helping maintain the spaces that are enjoyed daily by students, staff, Fellows and alumni. For her, the role of a college gardener is about creating beautiful environments that people can share, enjoy and remember.

700th Anniversary Alumni Garden Party 🥂

On Saturday 4th July, we welcomed more than 1,200 alumni and guests back to the College for the 700th Anniversary Alumni Garden Party, in what may have been the largest gathering of Clare alumni in the College’s history.

Guests enjoyed bright summer weather as they returned to enjoy the College grounds, where they were welcomed with a glass of special 700th Anniversary sparkling wine, alongside strawberries and ice cream, and enjoyed picnics across Memorial Court and the Fellows’ Garden.

Throughout the afternoon, alumni reconnected with friends old and new, posed for year-group photographs spanning matriculation years from the 1950s to recent graduates, and gathered together in the Fellows’ Garden for a memorable group photograph. Guests were also treated to a performance by the Choir of Clare College, including a special rendition of Happy Birthday to celebrate the College's 700-year history.

The day was a highlight of Clare’s 700th Anniversary year, and we were delighted to welcome alumni back from across the decades to share in this special milestone.

Student Spotlight 💡

Callon Peate (2023) is a third-year PhD student in Engineering at Clare, whose research focuses on hybrid manufacturing.

Alongside his doctoral studies, Callon is the co-founder of GreenMixes, a venture developing innovative technologies to capture carbon within cement, with the aim of helping to decarbonising the cement industry.

What began as a backyard project has since grown into a fully equipped laboratory operation. Along the way, Callon has achieved remarkable success, winning first place in the 2025/26 Trinity Bradfield Prize, Cambridge's most prestigious entrepreneurship competition, and most recently the Cambridge Climate Challenge, which recognises ventures with the potential to tackle climate change at scale.

We caught up with Callon to discuss his time at Clare, the inspiration and journey behind GreenMixes, and what lies ahead. You can read the full story here: https://stories.clare.cam.ac.uk/ClareNews2026-studentspotlight/index.html 🔗

A 700th Exhibition: Clare's Fellows' Library 📖

Clare's Library contains volumes on almost every conceivable subject—from Americana to zoology via cryptography and optics—spanning the ninth to the twentieth century.

Curated by Fellows' Librarian Tim Chester as part of Clare's 700th anniversary celebrations, this special 'birthday' exhibition showcases the remarkable breadth and richness of the College's collections through four chronological themes: the early years; Reformation; Stuart Expansion; science & war.

Highlights include the beautiful bindings of our 16-17th century literature, works by notable Clare figures such as Nicholas Ferrar and George Ruggle (who also feature in our 70 for 700 exhibition https://stories.clare.cam.ac.uk/70-for-700/index.html), and treasures such as Margaret Cavendish's 'The Blazing World', regarded as one of the earliest works of science fiction in the English language.
