This week’s theme is - and exciting day for so many of our museums friends and their visitors! Astley is of course continuing to undergo renovation so we’re not currently able to welcome folk through the doors yet... particularly as the doors aren’t here! They’re being conserved at the moment. This conservation has shown that they aren’t oak as we thought but in fact hard, slow growing pine. NB these colours aren’t staying - what you see is the primer.

An advent calendar’s appeared near our stage in the garden of remembrance. The first window opens tomorrow with a link to some festive goings on at Astley Hall - if you’re in the park come and (safely!) check it out

What else is going on at Astley?
Well this lil’ bundle of joy recently arrived! He’s a replica of one of the Great Hall’s Cherubs we’ve had made. He’s going to join us to visit schools on education visits (as schools won’t be able to visit us during the Hall’s renovations)
One thing he hasn’t got is a name... any suggestions?

This remarkable and nationally important Shovel Board Table is preparing to witness what will form the next phase of Astley Hall’s history. It will soon be packed away (in situ!) in readiness for the renovations to begin.

Standing in the Long Gallery at 23 feet, the table was made for playing a game similar to ‘shove ha'penny’. The aim was to push the counter as near to the edge as possible without it falling off into the tray at the end - the winner gets the opponents coin!

We’ve recently been told this item is one of the 12 most important pieces of English Oak in the country(!)
All that AND a UNICORN 🦄
If only we all had the luxury of such an extravagant form of home entertainment to get us through these next few months!!

Today as part of we’re going to give a glimpse into some of the projects we’re working on. Here’s what Astley Hall’s Artist in Residence is upto - referencing a carving in the Hall of biblical figure Judith, Rebecca’s creating a knife.

We would like to introduce you to our new intern, Abi!
Abi is a PhD researcher from the University of Manchester, who will be joining our heritage team over the next year to help bring Astley's history to life.
Abi will explore our historic collections and will be thinking about emotions, domestic rituals and supernatural belief in the 1500s and 1600s. Her investigations will shed some light on the meaning behind the curious incidence of burn marks at the Hall. We'll keep you up to date on Abi's discoveries!
