Working with Rachel Rose Reid on the 'Silence Speaks' project has been so much fun! We're grateful to Warwick's Connecting Cultures GRP and Arts and Humanities Impact Fund for making it possible. Thanks too to St Mary's Guildhall for providing us with such an evocative performance space!

Read more about how this work opens medieval French texts to new interpretations and new audiences:

The modern-day debate about gender identity can take some lessons from a 13th-century story. Researchers at the University of Warwick worked with a professional storyteller to bring Roman de Silence to new audiences.

Lots of interesting things happening at the Beyond Words French Literature Festival at the Institut français, 12 -21 May – including a screening of Annie Ernaux’s Les Années super 8, some Duras films and (Colette’s) Gigi – with Leslie Caron there to discuss it.
There’s also a table ronde on Colette with Emmanuelle Lambert, Deborah Levy, Michèle Roberts and Diana Holmes.

From 12 to 21 May, the Institut français goes Beyond Words to cross borders and genres and takes us on a literary journey through lively discussions, powerful readings and inspiring live performances and screenings.

Many congratulations to our alumnus Ellie Smith for winning the Richard Dyer Essay Prize for her MA essay written in our department: 'Limiting Lesbianism: Conventions and the Frame'! Judges of this new prize recognising outstanding student writing on any topic relating to LGBTQIA+ screen studies were 'especially impressed by the theoretical sophistication of [the] writing, the sensitive analysis of the films and the elegant writing style. We thought that it was outstanding work, which was of publishable quality.' With thanks to the lgbtqia+ BAFTSS SIG https://www.facebook.com/groups/546498479636913/

Exciting UG funding opportunity: Let’s Study French at Uni!

Student-Led Project Grants to Promote French and Francophone Studies

The Association of University Professors and Heads of French+ (AUPHF+) is offering two project grants, worth £500 each, for student-led projects that will promote the study of French and Francophone Studies at University.

The projects will be entirely student-led and could for instance include outreach activities in secondary schools, taster workshops, film screenings, a performance, a creative writing event, etc. Students will shape and conduct their project collaboratively in a group. The projects should be principally aimed at widening participation through activities engaging prospective students from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds as well as supporting their access to Higher Education and engagement with the study of French and Francophone studies. We encourage you to be creative!

The competition is open to all undergraduate students of French or French and Francophone Studies enrolled at a UK University.

Please submit a proposal of maximum 2 pages outlining your planned activities, who will participate in the project, your target audience, the aims of your project and how you would spend the grant to Prof. Marion Schmid ([email protected]).

The deadline for receipt of applications is 31 March 2023. Successful applicants will be notified in April. All projects must be completed by 31 December 2023. The winning teams will be required to provide an update about their activities during the project and to submit a brief report after its completion.
