Day 7 of the 30 Days, 30 Ways UK campaign looks at 'Trusted Information'.

In an emergency, knowing where information comes from matters, but trust is about more than simply finding an “official” source.

Our 2025 NCR roundtable on Resilience in the Age of Mis- and Disinformation explored how changing media environments, declining trust and the rapid spread of information are affecting emergency communication in Scotland. One message came through particularly strongly: Trust cannot be built quickly or only when a crisis happens. It needs to be built before crises hit.

Participants also challenged the idea of a single “source of truth”. People have to navigate complex information environments and rely on multiple sources, from official channels and public service media to local radio, community organisations and trusted local voices.

Effective emergency communication therefore depends on consistency, transparency and relationships that already exist before an emergency occurs.

Rumours and misleading information can spread quickly online, creating confusion and sometimes encouraging unsafe decisions.

Before you share something, pause and check: is the information official, verified and current?

Trusted information helps everyone make better decisions.

• Your local council.
• Your Local Resilience Forum.
• Local emergency services.
• Relevant health and government organisations.
You could also tidy up your social media feeds so trustworthy sources are easier to find when you need them.

Scotland's hottest day of the year has seen gritters spreading sand to protect road surfaces from extreme heat, a clear reminder that resilience isn't just about responding to severe weather, but adapting to the changing conditions we increasingly face.

As this BBC News article highlights, high temperatures can affect everything from transport infrastructure and public health to water safety, ecosystems and emergency planning. As our climate changes, these impacts are becoming more frequent and interconnected.

To build true resilience, we need to understand these evolving risks and ensure our infrastructure, services and communities are prepared for both today's challenges and those of the future.

At the National Centre for Resilience, we work with researchers, policymakers, practitioners and communities to help translate evidence into action that strengthens resilience across Scotland.
