Recent developments in X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) technology allow us to observe processes that occur on the femtosecond time scale (femtosecond = quadrillionth of a second). Kirrander group at Edinburgh are using this to study ultrafast photochemical reactions like photosynthesis.

Evidence of lubricant use dates back thousands of years. In ancient Egypt building stones were slid on oil-lubricated lumber and chariots were lubricated with calcium soap as far back as 1400 BC!
