This Scandinavian studies student is spent their 2024/25 year abroad at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway!

'For my mandatory language acquisition year, I chose to go to Tromsø. The biggest attraction was the unique location in the arctic circle - not many people can say that they’ve lived there!

Due to how far north Tromsø is, in winter there is almost 2 months of uninterrupted darkness, which makes Edinburgh’s winters feel easy. You end up doing a lot of sleeping, but the reward is you get to see the northern lights on almost every clear night. My favorite place was anywhere in the mountains - Tromsø is surrounded by fjords and mountains and you can explore for miles and miles.

My time on exchange has definitely made me more open to a life abroad and the possibility of further education in a different country. If you're thinking about applying - go for it, because you may never get a chance like this again!'

Are you going on exchange for Semester 1 or the Full Academic Year of 2026/27? It's time to start working on your Learning Agreement.

Hopefully, this is not the first time you have looked at your host institution's course offering but it's time to sit down and make plans.

Before picking your courses, be sure to check in with your Exchange Coordinator about the academic requirements. Think about questions like:

🔸How many courses can you take outside of your subject area?
🔸Are there any mandatory courses for your subject area which you need to find equivalents for?
🔸Is there any online coursework you need to enrol on to meet the requirements of your third year?
🔸For joint honours students, how should your credits be split between your two subjects?

Remember!

🔸You have to finish your Learning Agreement at least 4 weeks before your exchange.
🔸Many Exchange Coordinators take summer leave, and European partner universities often close in August - start early to account for these factors!
🔸You can complete it even if you're not officially enrolled yet—just include the courses you plan to take.

To find out more about how to complete your Learning Agreement, head to your workflow on Mobility Online and download our guidance document!

2026/27 exchange activity around the corner? Have you started your Risk Assessment?

The Risk Assessment is an essential and mandatory part of the process of preparing yourself for your activity abroad. It helps you think about any risks your destination might have and how to handle them. If you’re a University of Edinburgh student going abroad for a study exchange, research or work placement, you'll need to have an approved Risk Assessment for your activity in place.

Please note that you won't be covered by the University of Edinburgh’s travel insurance until your Risk Assessment is finished and approved - this coverage is a must for all study and work abroad activities. We recommend that you don’t make any bookings—like flights or accommodation—until you have your acceptance letter from your host institution and your Risk Assessment is approved.

Once you’ve completed the form, upload it to your Mobility Online workflow for approval and remember that it must be approved at least 4 weeks before your departure.

You can download our Risk Assessment Guidance Document from our website for more information. Link in bio!
