The School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex uniquely combines the four departments of Anthropology, Geography, International Development and International Relations to address the most pressing global issues of our times. The School of Global Studies was founded in 2009, bringing together the departments of Anthropology, Geography and International Relations, and a cross-disciplinary

programme in International Development. Global Studies grew out of earlier interdisciplinary formations at the University of Sussex, a strong influence being the legendary School of African and Asian Studies - AFRAS. Embodying the values of critical, creative and innovative research that have animated Sussex since it was founded in 1961, Global Studies is concerned with the study of some of the most pressing global issues of our times. Combining cutting-edge research on issues such as climate change, the politics of pandemic disease, new democratic spaces, human rights, sexual dissidence, conflict, and security, with a vibrant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme, the School is concerned not only with understanding global transformations, but also with actively contributing to the struggle for global justice and equality for all.

โ™ป๏ธ๐ŸŒฑCan sustainability exist within endless growth?

As continues to rise globally, this question becomes an increasingly important one to answer.

โœIn his recent Monthly Review article, Professor Benjamin Selwyn explores how many practices celebrated today as innovative sustainability strategies were already identified by Karl Marx over a century ago.

The article challenges mainstream circular economy narratives that promise sustainability without questioning the underlying systems driving , exploitation, and environmental destruction.

It concludes: 'By reducing and eventually eliminating extraction-production-consumption-disposal/waste under competitive accumulation, it would be possible to rationally plan production to meet human and our planetโ€™s environmental needs.'

Magnus met with H.E. Mr. Ravshan Usmanov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the UK and Iceland to discuss how to further develop their collaboration.

"Sussex and the Sussex Centre are delighted to have established this relationship with colleagues in . I hope the collaboration will further deepen our relations with institutions and scholars in and help to ensure that the work we conduct there reflects the priorities and concerns of the region", said Magnus.

Sussex Anthropology alum Oybek Ulugbekov, Lecturer in the Department of Ethnology and Anthropology at the National University of Uzbekistan, said:
(โ€ฆ) โ€œSince the field of social anthropology is still in its early stages of development within the academic community of Uzbekistan, the MoU established between our universities holds significant importance for the further advancement of the Anthropology and academic direction at the National University of Uzbekistanโ€.

Associate Professor in Social Anthropology at Sussex Dr Diana Ibanez-Tirado added:
(โ€ฆ) โ€œThe MoU seeks to enhance collaboration and deepen the understanding of Uzbekistan and the wider region, creating opportunities for exchanges beyond social sciences and humanities, where some achievements, like a joint publication, have already taken placeโ€.
