Last but not least keynote speaker! Terence Cave is Emeritus Professor of French Literature at the University of Oxford and Emeritus Fellow of St John’s College. He has spent most of his academic career at Oxford, but has also held visiting posts at universities in the USA, in France, and in Norway. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and an Honorary Fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He holds an honorary doctorate at Royal Holloway University of London. In 2009 he was awarded the International Balzan Prize for Literature since 1500. His latest book, Thinking with Literature: Towards a Cognitive Criticism (2016), explores new ways of approaching the relation between literary studies and the interdisciplinary field of cognitive studies. Our Fifth keynote: Lambros Malafouris! Malafouris is a Professor of Cognitive and Anthropological Archaeology. His primary interest lies in the study of the interaction between cognition and material culture. He is currently Principal Investigator of the project HANDMADE: Understanding Creative Gesture in Pottery Making. This post highlights our fourth keynote speaker: Lydia Kokkola from University of Oulu. Her main research interests are Reading in English as a Foreign Language, Children’s Literature, Adolescence, Trauma Studies and Cognitive Literary Theory. I hope you've been enjoying the beautiful full harvest moon over the past couple of days. Here in Honolulu, we've been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival. The full moon symbolizes family reunion and the acceptance of change as it wanes. This tradition, which was first celebrated during China's Zhou Dynasty more than 3,000 years ago, is now observed in many countries, including Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, and among diasporas where people of these cultures reside.

With this Asian sentiment in mind, I would like to introduce our third keynote speaker, Professor Shan Gao:

Shan Gao presently serves as an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at Soochow University in China. She completed her Master's degree in philosophy at Beijing Normal University. In 2005, she achieved her Ph.D. in Environmental Philosophy from the University of North Texas in the United States. Her research interests encompass a broad spectrum, including the history of Western philosophy and Chinese philosophy, Comparative Philosophy Between East and West, as well as Environmental Ethics and Environmental Aesthetics.

One of the significant milestones in Professor Gao's career is her establishment of the Research Center for Nature, Wilderness, and Civilization (NWC). This momentous initiative has had a profound impact across multiple disciplines by exploring and investigating the intricate relationship between the environment and civilization.

Today, we are featuring our first keynote speaker: Harry Heft

Prof. Heft's scholarly interests primarily concern topics in the related areas of environmental and ecological psychology. His book "Ecological Psychology in Context" (LEA, 2001) elucidates the theoretical and philosophical foundations of ecological psychology and some of its connections to current work in cultural psychology.

Much of his research has examined the process by which humans find their way through the environment, with its focus on identifying the environmental information that is utilized in learning a path or route. On-going research in this vein is attempting to understand how this route knowledge can be employed to promote understanding of the overall configuration of a place. He has also conducted research in the past on the perception of affordances (i.e., the perceived functional meaning of objects and environmental features), the development of children's navigational skills, environmental aesthetics, and the effects of noise in the home on cognitive development.
