Last Friday, Ming-Ai (London) Institute was proud to partner with the University of Westminster to deliver Heritage in Action: A Workshop & Book Launch at Fyvie Hall, Regent Street. The event opened with remarks from Dr Lucy Bond, Head of the School of Humanities at Westminster, and Ms Chungwen Li, Dean of Ming-Ai (London) Institute, highlighting the importance of cultural heritage, community engagement, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The event examined how documentary film and historical fiction can bring renewed visibility to the Chinese Labour Corps (CLC), whose contribution to the First World War has long remained marginal in mainstream narratives. Highlights included a documentary screening by Caroline Chu and the launch of For Whom the Temple Waits (by Clive Harvey and Caroline Chu, with artwork by Shiquan Zou and historical photographs by John de Lucy).

A panel chaired by Prof Cangbai Wang, with contributions from leading scholars, explored geopolitics, memory and representation, including Dr Anne Witchard, Dr Michael Nath, Dr Frances Wood, and Prof Anna Branach-Kallas. The discussion reaffirmed the role of interdisciplinary collaboration in shaping more inclusive and globally informed approaches to heritage.

Holland Kwok arrived as a young immigrant to the United Kingdom from Hong Kong in 1958 and started working in restaurants as a way of providing for his new life in London. Along the way, he discovered that it was more than simply a job, restaurants were his passion, and with the opening of The Good Earth his dream was realised. Today the Good Earth Restaurant stands as a testament of the values and virtual that Holland stood for. In 1991 Holland help create Ming-Ai with its founder, Dr Therese Shak and became its first Chairman. Under his leadership Ming-Ai prospered and grew as a charitable organisation supporting the Chinese community in the UK. Through his tenure Holland made generous donations and personal commitments to support the efforts of Ming-Ai and was a steadying hand in helping Ming-Ai navigate the challenges of creating a heritage legacy for the Chinese people who chose to live and work in the United Kingdom. Holland will be sadly missed by all that know him, but his kindness will endure and fondness for him will live on in our memories.

Each November, the sight of poppies across the UK reminds us to honour those who gave their lives in war. On this year’s Armistice Day, Ming Ai (London) Institute joined fellow Chinese community organisations at the Cenotaph to pay tribute to the Chinese Labour Corps and Chinese soldiers who served alongside the British forces in both World Wars.

Our British Chinese Heritage Centre continues to preserve their legacy through the WWI Chinese Labour Corps Database, a project dedicated to education, remembrance, and research.
