We recently had the privilege of hosting an incredible Arabic calligraphy workshop led by the talented Yasmine Kadhim, a local Ealing artist working across the borough and what a truly inspiring experience it was for UWL students! โœจ๐ŸŽจ
ย
This was part of an amazing project called โ€˜Culture, Wellbeing and Future Pathwaysโ€™, led by one of our talented UWL students through our Students for Students campaign. This programme focuses on developing studentsโ€™ event planning and leadership skills, with dedicated mentoring support from the Volunteering and Civic Engagement Team.
ย
With 15 students taking part, the session brought together a diverse group. Some students arrived with a little knowledge of Arabic, while others were complete beginners and it was inspiring to see students confidently share their knowledge while others engaged with curiosity. This event was a great example of genuine cultural exchange through an innovative creative practice.
ย
Throughout the workshop, students explored the fundamentals of Arabic calligraphy using a wide range of materials from bamboo pens and calligraphy ink to paints and pastels creating unique, expressive pieces of their own! ๐Ÿ–Œ๏ธ๐Ÿ–‹๏ธ

Beyond learning a new skill, students gained a deeper appreciation for Arabic language, reflecting the power of art to bring people together ๐ŸŒ
ย
Weโ€™re also proud to share that the artwork created will be displayed within the community, celebrating both creativity and cultural connection. Please keep an eye out for details! ๐Ÿ‘€
ย
โœจ Next up: Vision Boarding Workshop tomorrow, 2.00.3:30pm

A huge thank you to Yasmine Kadhim for leading such a meaningful and enriching session ๐Ÿ’›

Xmas Party Volunteering

Our students had a wonderful time at the Pepper Pot Centre in Ladbroke Grove last week, where they volunteered to support the annual Xmas Party for residents and members.

It was a busy afternoon of serving food and drinks to more than 100 guests, but was well worth the effort! Heartwarming to see so many elderly residents feel connected and joyful at what can be a very isolated time of year. Some of our students even had a boogie with the residents.

We listened to a thank you speech from the Mayor of Kensington and Chelsea, and also from the fantastic staff of the PPC, which after 44 years continues to be a vital community asset for the area.

We are running an event called a Social Hackathon - 'Connect, Support, Give Voice to West London' hosted in collaboration with ***rProject โญ

โฐ Wednesday 18 June ยท 5 - 7.30pm
๐Ÿ“ University of West London Paragon Building next to the Great West Road in Brentford.

This event is part of the London Festival of Architecture and open to all local residents, UWL staff and students.

The University of West London invites Hounslow residents, students and its staff to take part! ๐Ÿ’œ

A social hackathon is a challenge-based workshop event where participants generate ideas to support charities working with community groups. As part of this event and to support Pride Month, Hounslow residents, UWL students and staff are being tasked to come up with creative ideas to help expand the service of West London Q***r Project (WLQP), an organisation that aims to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people in West London and beyond.

We had a great afternoon volunteering with Southall Community Alliance helping to support their Western Road Urban Garden in Southall.

Student volunteers learnt about the incredible work led by SCA and community groups in transforming this once derelict and neglected space into a food-growing garden that feeds residents and school children with nutritious, organic food.

Our student volunteers developed skills such as teamwork, construction and communication to install a climbing frame for the melons and beans they planted. We canโ€™t wait to come back in a couple of months to help with the harvest! A few hours outdoors in nature also provided a welcome wellbeing break (and recharge) for our students completing their dissertations and assessments.

The 2600-sq metre Western Road Urban Garden is a wonderful community asset for the immediate neighbourhood and provides a restful urban oasis for elders, school children and local wildlife. The site is allows for community groups including womenโ€™s collectives and primary schools to grow culturally appropriate food such as bitter melon, okra, scotch bonnet chillies and more.

Much of the harvest is distributed to poor and homeless residents in the boroughs of Ealing, Hounslow and Hillingdon, providing healthy meals for vulnerable people.

There are ample volunteering opportunities with over the summer. Please visit their website for more info on how to get involved.
