🥳Congratulations Koto and James!!! 🥳

🎉 Koto Nakajima, a first-year undergraduate student in the UCL Department of History, and James Fielding, a first-year undergraduate student in the UCL Institute of Archaeology, were both selected this year to become Laidlaw Scholars.

On being awarded the Scholarship, Koto said: “I feel honoured and delighted to have this opportunity to engage in this research project! Ever since reading the project description, I knew this project was the one, and I am very excited to work with Professor Theano Moussouri.”

James described the Scholarship as "a fantastic opportunity", telling us, "I’m really excited to get underway with my work with the rest of the team and uncover more amazing stories about archaeology and the impact it has on local communities across the world.”

Congratulations to our Laidlaw Scholars! We look forward to working with you.

Happy bicentenary, UCL 🎉

As part of UCL Illuminated, the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences marked 200 years of University College London by bringing our departments together through one shared story: One river, many perspectives.

The River Thames runs through the heart of London — and through the heart of our disciplines.

From the artefacts uncovered on its foreshore to the political institutions of Westminster.
From the Mayflower setting sail from Rotherhithe to the US Embassy in Battersea.
From trade and economic exchange to shifting estuary landscapes.
From artistic inspiration to the growth of a global city.

The Thames connects Archaeology, Anthropology, Americas, Economics, Geography, History, History of Art and Political Science — showing how one place can be understood in countless ways.

Here's to another 200 years!

We’re proud to share that UCL is ranked 1st in the UK for sustainability in the QS Sustainability Rankings — for the second year running! 🎉

And for the first time, UCL has been named the 3rd most sustainable university in the world, climbing two places from last year with an outstanding overall score of 99/100.

This achievement reflects the impact of our research, education, and operations, and our commitment to building a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable future. 🌱 Our vision is outlined in the Sustainability Plan 2025–2035 and celebrated through our campaign.

For 200 years, UCL’s founding principles have empowered us to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges. As we look ahead to the next 200 years, we remain committed to combining bold ambition with academic precision.

👏 Thank you to our students, staff, and community — your everyday actions spark extraordinary impact and make this possible.

As cultural heritage institutions across the nation grapple with the realisation that their collecting histories have captured an incomplete picture of the past, curators and archivists have been drawn into complex conversations.

Hosted by the UCL Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slavery, join Dorothy Berry for a public conversation on her new book, The House Archives Built and Other Thoughts on Black Archival Possibilities. This work brings together years of those conversations—from their origins in conference halls, webinars and reading rooms—and opens them up to the public.

In celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the latest episode of Generation One spotlights the power of entrepreneurs turning climate ambition into climate action.

🎙️ Hosts Prof. Mark Maslin and Dr. Simon Chin-Yee are joined by:

Alexandra Ranft, Senior Project Manager at UN Global Compact Network UK

William Moore, Co-founder & CEO of Consus Energy (part of UCL’s Hatchery incubator)
