On the weekend of November 30th-December 1st URNU members took part in a leadership course organised by the Operational Command Training Organisation (OCTO). Here amongst many things, they learned keys to leadership and how to perform under pressure.

Work hard, play hard. ⠀

Socials are an important part of URNU life. Aside from the regular socials following each Thursday drill night, a variety of other social events take place every year. These have included Christmas and Spring balls, formal dinners and regular outings in London. These offer plenty of opportunities to meet people from both within and outside the unit, forming networks and friendships to last a lifetime. ⠀

Hannah - Queen Mary University of London - 3rd Year - International Relations⠀

"I was never expecting to join the URNU. I was in my second year at University when I decided to walk around the freshers fair with my friend as I wanted to join some new societies to get myself a bit more stuck in with university life. My friend was interested in the URNU stall so we decided to have a chat with them and she managed to convince me to come along with her to the open evening. I loved the sound of what the URNU had to offer and I thought that I would really fit in so I decided to put in an application. ⠀

Best moments - My best moments in the URNU have all been ones that have taken me outside of my comfort zone. The first time I ever faced rough weather onboard a P2000 was initially something that made me uncomfortable. I was unsure on what to expect and the situation was changing rapidly. However, looking back, it was one of my best moments in the URNU, I learnt what it meant to stay cool under pressure and once I had eased into it, I had a lot of fun. ⠀

Biggest surprise - When I joined the URNU I was sure that I would make friends, but I never quite realised that I would make best friends. URNU has been a great place to meet like-minded people. Many in the URNU come from up and down the country and all do different degrees and so I have learnt a lot from my friends in the URNU.⠀

Will - Queen Mary University of London - Final Year - B.A. Geography ⠀

"I joined URNU to get a taste of life in the Royal Navy, to be challenged, to make friends and to travel.⠀

I have had many great moments. However, one that sticks out has to be the time recently spent aboard HMS Westminster, including a chance to join a training serial in the Wildcat. ⠀

The biggest lesson for me from the URNU is the sheer power of having a good team around you, especially out on deployments. It has also given me an enormous sense of drive to challenge myself and the confidence to step into unfamiliar situations fairly comfortably.⠀

- Challenging, exciting, memorable -"⠀
