THERAPEUTIC RESOURCES: HELPING TEENAGERS TO TALK ABOUT THEIR LIVES CARDS

Many teenagers struggle to talk openly about what they are going through- strong emotions, social pressures and developing identities can make it difficult for young people to find the words to describe their experiences.

Our Helping Teenagers Talk About Their Lives cards provide thoughtful prompts to help start meaningful conversations. These practical resource cards help teenagers explore:

• feelings and identity
• friendships and family relationships
• worries, pressures and hopes for the future
• the experiences shaping their lives

Used by teachers, counsellors, therapists, youth workers and parents, the cards offer a simple but powerful way to help teenagers open up and feel understood.

What happens when a child feels overwhelmed?

This short animation from Beacon House Therapeutic Services and Trauma Team explains the Window of Tolerance- the space where we feel calm, safe and able to learn. When children move outside this window, they may become anxious, reactive or withdrawn, making it harder to think clearly or engage with others.

At the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education, we use creative and relational approaches to help children and young people build emotional regulation and feel safe enough to learn and connect. Understanding regulation helps us respond with curiosity, compassion and skill.

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL DANCE DAY! This year, International Dance Day invites us to reflect on the power of movement to connect us, especially in times of uncertainty.

In her 2026 message, renowned choreographer Crystal Pite reminds us that creativity can be a source of hope and humanity, describing how through artistic expression we build “small acts of courage, curiosity, kindness and collaboration.”

At the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education, we see this every day.
Dance and the creative arts provide a language beyond words- helping children, young people and adults express emotions, build connection and make sense of their experiences.

Whether in therapy, education or community settings, movement can support wellbeing, belonging and emotional growth.

Today, we celebrate the artists, therapists, educators and students who use creativity to support healing and learning, and recognise the vital role of the arts in nurturing healthy, connected communities.

Understanding behaviour begins with understanding the brain.

This powerful animation from the UK Trauma Council explains how the brain adapts to adversity. When children experience stress, neglect or trauma, their brains may become highly alert to danger, less responsive to reward, or more focused on negative memories- adaptations that can help them cope in the short term but may increase vulnerability to later emotional or behavioural difficulties.

Importantly, these responses are not signs of damage or failure- they are signs of adaptation.

At the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education, this understanding sits at the heart of our work. Through creative and relational approaches- including art therapy, therapeutic education and trauma-informed practice, we support children, young people and adults to feel safe, express emotions and rebuild trust in relationships.

The science reminds us that the brain is shaped by experience, and that supportive, attuned relationships can help create new pathways for learning, regulation and wellbeing.
