📚 Explore children's literature through taste at 'Tasting Children’s Literature: An Edible Read-A-Thon' as part of the Manchester City of Literature

🍎 “Tasting Children’s Literature: An Edible Read-A-Thon” is an immersive experience and read-a-thon of classic and contemporary children’s literature aimed at young children up to the age of 8.

🚸 The workshop will engage children in drawing pictures of and telling stories about the foods that come to life in their favourite stories, as well as the foods that mean most to them and their communities.

We are pleased to celebrate 20 years of the Morgan Centre with an exhibition launch, poetry performance and creative activities.

For the last 20 years, the Morgan Centre has explored the relational nature of social life as it is experienced in the everyday. Fuelled by unruly imagination and curiosity, and an inventive openness to new and different disciplinary and methodological approaches, the Morgan Centre has aimed to create exciting spaces for researchers to come together in a spirit of intellectual generosity, liveliness and enthusiasm. This exhibition is one such space, bringing together posters and materials that foreground the creative engagements and collaborations which have been at the heart of our work.

This special event will include a drinks reception.

Cosmic Titans – in conversation with David Olusoga

Join us as we once again partner with Jodrell Bank for an evening that moves between science, art and philosophy to ponder what it means to imagine the universe when what we know is only ever partial.

Reflecting on Cosmic Titans – an exhibition of sculpture, installation and photographic work created through collaborations between contemporary artists and leading researchers in quantum physics – the evening brings together leading voices in science and contemporary art, in a conversation hosted by historian and broadcaster Professor David Olusoga OBE.

Joining him are Professor Silke Weinfurtner, quantum physicist at the University of Manchester and co-founder of ARTlab; curator and astrophysicist Dr Ulrike Kuchner and acclaimed artist Conrad Shawcross RA whose work is featured within the exhibition.

The evening will conclude with a specially curated DJ set from artist and composer Matthew Woodham and forms an immersive response to the themes of Cosmic Titans.

This exhibition was co-designed by students enrolled in the Institute For Cultural Practices- University of Manchester 'Archiving Culture' module. Convened by Dr James Fenwick, the exhibition features student-designed panels exploring themes uncovered through archival research, from Manchester’s nightlife to femme fatales on screen.

Presenting archival research through critical and inclusive lenses, the exhibition examines representation across contemporary culture, communities and histories.

Last month were delighted to host Cottonopolis - The Origins of Global Manchester at John Rylands Research Institute and Library.

In this discussion, David Olusoga OBE, was joined by Prof Edmond Smith and Dr Cassandra Gooptar. Together, they reflected on how Manchester’s rapid industrial growth was shaped by connections to India, Africa and the Americas – connections that provided raw materials, labour, markets and capital.

Join us for a special public engagement lecture with Andrew Melchior, creative technologist, CTO of Massive Attack and founder of Genotone Ltd.

In this talk, Andrew Melchior draws on his experience advising UK government technical working groups on AI and copyright, and his work building Genotone, an open provenance protocol designed to establish verifiable authorship at the point of creation. He argues that the challenge is not simply legal but infrastructural: without a reliable way to distinguish human-made work from AI-generated content, and to trace the lineage of creative material through complex supply chains, no rights regime can be effectively enforced.

Weaving together perspectives from music, policy, and technology, the talk will sit at the intersection of AI, copyright, and artist provenance infrastructure and examine what meaningful protection for artists might look like in practice.
