On my final working day at the Manor, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support over the last 8.5 years. I've enjoyed finding out a little bit more about Mr Gregory and his Manor and sharing it on here. Happy Christmas and very best wishes for 2020!

A set of five pastoral scenes in oils on canvas representing
Helen, Flora, Musidora, Pomona and Diana by Francois Boucher (1703-1770), court painter to Louis XV were painted in 1745 for Madame de Pompadour and later placed in her Chateau de Bellevue, near Paris. Gregory Gregory later purchased the paintings and had them installed in the Manor, probably in the Gold Room. They were designed as
overdoor panels originally in Chantilly oval frames. Two of these paintings can be seen today in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, Legion of Honor Gallery 7.

Gregory Gregory was an avid book collector. The 1864
inventory of Harlaxton Manor lists a substantial collection of
2818 volumes spread across 714 titles, which we believe were housed in his sitting room (Morning Room) and a "Book Room" (possibly the Van der Elst Room). As would be expected there were a large number of books on History, Geography/Travel, Architecture and the Arts, Science, Literature, Religion and a particular interest in Genealogy, Horticulture and Funerals!

Continuing the Gregory Heirlooms tour of the Manor, we move on to the Great Hall. By looking through the inventory listings for this room, it was here that Gregory enjoyed a game of chess or backgammon, and playing the piano.

The second in the Gregory Heirloom poster series, a Suite of Louis XV Tapestry Furniture consisting of a sofa, 8 chairs and a firescreen. The sofa was listed as being in the Tapestry (Long) Gallery, with the chairs spread in pairs throughout the State Rooms. The Suite was manufactured by Jacques Neilson for Mme de Pompadour under her own supervision for her Château de Bellevue, woven with pastoral scenes after cartoons by François Boucher. After being sold in the 1878 Christie's Gregory Heirlooms sale, the Suite found its way into Sir George Cooper's collection at Hursley Park, near Wi******er. A series of Historic England images show the Suite in the Ballroom in 1905. https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/photos/item/BL18778

Continuing the Provenance Project started by Dr Heidi Strobel and the Art History students in Spring 2019, this the first in a series of posts celebrating the Gregory Heirlooms - the "embarrassment of riches" collected by Gregory Gregory on his travels, and the reason behind the building of Harlaxton Manor. This pair of marble busts could have been located in the niches either side of the entrance to the Great Hall, in the area originally known as the Marble Corridor.
