Donation Day success!

Thank you to our students and local community who have donated their unwanted items to local charities Christian Community Action (CCA) and CIRDIC today at St Luke's Church on Erleigh Road.

Almost 150 bags of goods were collected along with other household furniture such as foldable chairs, desks and more!

Our third Donation Day has been a success and helps to reduce waste in the local community during the student move-out period, part of our Hello Neighbour campaign.

Thank you.

Nine subjects ranked in the UK Top 10

The latest Complete University Guide has recognised the breadth of academic excellence at the University of Reading with nine subjects now ranked among the UK's top 10.

Three are ranked in the national top three:

🥇 Land and Property Management (1st)
🥈 Information Technology and Systems (2nd)
🥉 Geology and Climate Science (3rd)

Alongside top 10 positions for Speech & Language Therapy, Building, Agriculture & Forestry, Archaeology, Food Science and Education.

What stands out is the diversity of disciplines represented. From tackling climate change and food security, to shaping cities, improving health outcomes and driving technological innovation, Reading continues to deliver excellence in areas that matter to society and the economy.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Van de Noort, said: "These results show the breadth of academic excellence at Reading. Nine subjects in the national top ten is a strong performance."

As we approach our Summer Open Days, these rankings provide further evidence of what our students, staff and alumni already know: Reading is a university where world-class teaching, research and real-world impact go hand in hand.

Could stem cells help tackle chronic nerve pain?

Researchers at the University of Reading School of Pharmacy have secured international funding to investigate a promising new approach to treating chronic nerve pain - a condition that affects millions of people worldwide.

The RESOLVE project will explore whether tiny particles naturally released by stem cells could help reduce the inflammation that drives persistent pain, potentially offering a completely new way of treating the condition.

The research will involve laboratory studies, patient samples and carefully regulated animal research. It's one example of how animal research continues to contribute to advances in medicine and our understanding of disease.

This Thursday, our researchers will be discussing the role animal research has played in discoveries like these, and answering questions from the public at a special centenary lecture.

Autistic thriving at school and beyond

Much is known about autistic distress but less is known about autistic wellbeing and thriving, so the Centre for Autism Wellbeing Hub - University of Reading embarked on a project working with autistic young people to better understand what support helps them flourish in education and everyday life.

Their research and key insights were shared at a special event last month, funded by the University’s Centenary Grant, which also featured researchers, practitioners and a keynote lecture from Andy Smith from Spectrum Gaming.

The event is available to watch now via the Centre's YouTube channel: https://rdg.ac/4ubPwyP

Meet the newest members of the University of Reading llama family

Denzil, Marlene, Raquel, Rodney and Trigger have officially joined the herd at the University of Reading's Centre for Dairy Research (CEDAR).

But while they may look like they’ve wandered out of Only Fools and Horses, these llamas are helping support world-leading medical research.

The herd plays an important role in Reading’s nanobody research programme. Llamas naturally produce tiny antibodies that scientists can use to help develop new treatments and research tools for diseases including cancer, bird flu and malaria.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, nanobodies from the Reading herd even contributed to research into treatments for the virus.

Professor Gary Stephens who leads the programme said: “Their welfare is absolutely our priority… but they are also doing something quite incredible.”

We honestly love posting about the llamas. The science they support makes it even better.

We've been studying artisan cheese… and the results are pretty fascinating.

Scientists from the University of Reading have discovered that the bacteria responsible for giving some artisan cheeses their distinctive flavour may also have benefits for gut health.

Working with Oxfordshire-based Nettlebed Creamery, the team studied how bacteria develop as cheeses mature, finding microbial strains linked to digestion and other health benefits. Lactose was also almost entirely absent in the cheeses by the time they fully matured.

It’s another example of how Reading researchers are exploring the links between food, health and sustainability, sometimes in very delicious ways.

Recognising the impact of Councillor Alice Mpofu-Coles' tenure as The Mayor of Reading – as her outstanding term of service to our town and community comes to an end.

As both an alumna and colleague of the University of Reading, Dr Alice Mpofu-Coles’ mayoralty has held particular significance during our centenary year, reflecting the deep connection between the University and the wider community we serve.

As a passionate advocate for inclusion, community partnership and the role universities can play in civic life, her work has championed sanctuary initiatives and helped strengthen the University’s presence across Reading.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Van de Noort, said: “As we strive to be a truly civic university, relationships like these are crucial in building stronger ties between the town and University, enabling us to work together and create a better Reading for everyone.”

Thank you, Alice, for your leadership, partnership and commitment to our town. We look forward to continuing to work together in the years ahead.
