The USW Mooting Society is for students to learn all manner of advocacy skills from interviewing skills and public speaking to mock trial skills in competitive moots, moot demonstrations and mock moots in preparation for university mooting assessments.

Why do we suggest you moot? Well, you wouldn't be allowed on the road without driving lessons which provide you with the skills that you require to drive solo. Mooting teaches you the skills that you need to be a lawyer. Don't be nervous about joining your mooting society and taking part.

In any interview you will be asked to demonstrate your interest in a career as a Barrister or Solicitor. Mooting ticks that box for you. Try it. It's fine to make mistakes. There is no need to "win." It's the taking part that matters.

Hi Everyone,

USW Mooting Society has been invited to participate in the British Inter-University Commercial Awareness Competition.

The competition will run in Autumn 2020 and over 5 rounds, law students will have the unique opportunity to enhance their CVs by securing vacation schemes and work experience with prestigious City law firms (Simmons & Simmons, FieldFisher, BCLP, White & Case, Clifford Chance, and Addleshaw Goddard)

You will discover key topics that each City solicitor should understand, from the FTSE 100 to worldwide economic global affairs and essential business concepts. This knowledge will help you to understand the commercial environment of law firms and their clients. Overall, learning about the business will allow you to present yourself with a thorough understanding of commercial awareness in an interview.

Commercial Awareness:
Commercial awareness is a key attribute sought by many City Law Firm employers, and an essential skill to have which is not always emphasised enough. This competition is a chance for non-Russell group university students to showcase their commercial awareness skills and prove that they are to eligible to become City Law Firm Lawyers. BIUCAC believes that non-Russell group university students should not be denied the ability to excel and showcase their talent. Commercial awareness is a skill that all successful commercial lawyers must possess, and this competition allows students to showcase this ability. We stress and encourage that students take part in this amazing opportunity as failure to participate would mean that students would miss out on the great opportunity of not only winning some amazing prizes (12 in total including vacation scheme and work experiences) but the opportunity to network directly with professionals also.

NB: The Financial Times will also be giving participants free access to the Financial Times until the end of November!!

Timetable:
Due to COVID-19, all rounds will now be held online.

There are 5 rounds to the competition with the first round held on Monday 26th October 2020 and the finals held on Wednesday 25th November. The first three rounds of the competition will take the form of multiple-choice questions with the last two rounds being more advocacy based.

There is no entry fee and is open to all undergraduate and recent graduate students. If you are interested in entering or have any queries, please contact USW Mooting Society by either messaging us on here or sending an email to [email protected].

📣 Interested in the Bar? 📣

We’ve got all the info on the brand new Inns of Court College of Advocacy (ICCA) Bar Course!

It’s a more flexible and cheaper way of qualifying for the Bar beginning this year with applications opening in December 2019.

We’ll be going through the questions: what it is, how it’s structured, fees, delivery & applications.

📍 Friday 11th October at 1-2pm in Group Study Room 2 (Library - ground floor, just past the toilets)

Hope to see you there! 🎓

I can promise you, our moot sessions involve none of these things.

Hi guys!

So the official start of uni is right around the corner and we've got some amazing things planned with the USW Law Society (so if you're not a member yet, head on over there and join the group as we'd love to have you).

Our first event is tomorrow, September 20th on campus. It's the grand DRUNK MOOT* in which we get drunk at The Randy and socialise together so we can all feel a little more comfortable before heading down to TC103 (moot court) for the actual mixer at 6pm.

You need no previous experience in legal research or advocacy as the debate topics are purely ridiculous and the funniest argument wins. You'll be in teams so you won't be alone and so many of us don't know each other yet so I hope we'll be a welcoming environment even if you're worried about heading into society events this early on!

If you'd like to join us, you can send me an email at [email protected] to let me know to expect you or just pop by for drinks at 5pm.

*If you don't drink or would just rather not, you can still participate!

Elle.
