Research Spotlight: Our own Research Director Dr Mark Simpson from Ulster University School of Law has authored a major new UK-wide study revealing how devolution is reshaping social security across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Published by the University of Glasgow as part of the Nuffield Foundation-funded Safety Nets research programme, the landmark “State of the Nations” report highlights growing regional differences in welfare support, entitlement and delivery across the UK, with devolved policies adding £1 billion in social security spending in Scotland and Northern Ireland in 2024-25.

The report examines how devolved and localised approaches to welfare are affecting families and working-age adults across the four nations.

Call for participants:

Revisiting Northern/Irish Feminist Judgments. This new project seeks to provide the opportunity for both emerging and established feminist voices to take on new judgments or legal developments not covered in the previous edition.

Participants are invited to engage with any judgments or legal developments originating from the island of Ireland (which could include cases where the final judgment issued from the UK Supreme Court). Pre-existing expertise in feminist theory or feminist methodologies is not necessary, merely an interest in taking such approaches, and the collection will embrace a diversity of feminist approaches.

We invite interested participants to a workshop to be held at Ulster University, York St, Belfast on 4 September 2026.

We are very grateful for the generous support of our sponsors, Andrew Currie (AC Human) and Darragh Mackin (Phoenix Law), whose support made the event possible.
Our sincere thanks to the team at The Academy Restaurant for an excellent menu.
