New in JEMS - Cross-border ageing policies in the Greater Bay Area contrast with the immobility of older Mainland migrants in Hong Kong. Based on 32 interviews, this study by
Weixuan Chen, Danyang Lei, Wanying Liang, Izzy Yi Jian & Kar Him Mo shows how healthcare access, housing stability, neighbourhood ties, and institutional trust underpin place embeddedness, demonstrating that later-life mobility cannot be explained by cost and welfare portability alone.

Dominant deficit discourses marginalise both migrants and peripheral rural areas, shaping exclusion and decline.

Drawing on qualitative research in five rural regions of the Netherlands, a new study in JEMS by Jana Finke shows how migrant-centred civil society initiatives both reproduce and contest these narratives, highlighting their role in generating more inclusive and alternative local imaginaries.

New Special Issue International Norm Dynamics in Return and Readmission: A Research Agenda, edited by Erlend Paasche, Philipp Stutz & Florian Trauner.

EU return and readmission outcomes remain limited, often attributed to non‑EU states’ material disincentives. Adopting a constructivist lens, this Special Issue reframes the issue through norm dynamics, examining how the EU promotes readmission as an international obligation and how partner states contest it, advancing both empirical and theoretical understandings.

New longitudinal research (2022–2024) by Pedro Henrique Conte Gil, Alice Einloft Brunnet & Adolfo Pizzinato tracks Venezuelan migrants in Southern Brazil, revealing fluctuating physical and psychological wellbeing, declining community support, and persistent discrimination.

Qualitative insights link hardships to precarious work, family separation, and climate challenges. Findings highlight urgent need for policies tackling migrant vulnerability and strengthening inclusive support systems.
