There is an urgent need for health economics expertise within African governments.

Through the Thanzi Studentship Programme, the Thanzi Programme is helping to build this capacity from within by supporting professionals to study while remaining in their roles.

Thanzi Studentships provide tuition fee waivers for the Health Economics for Health Leadership and Development (HEDL) programme, enabling students to apply their learning in real time while strengthening health systems in their home countries. 🌍

Since 2023, the programme has supported 17 students from 11 African countries. More than 500 applications are received each year, demonstrating both the scale of demand and the importance of continued support.

How can you support Africa's health leaders?

🎁 Sponsor a studentship: A gift of £27,744 funds a full three-year MSc, directly investing in a future health leader.
🤝 Partner with us: Help fund cohorts or long-term initiatives to strengthen capacity.
📢 Share our mission: Spread the word (for example, by sharing this post with your network!) and let us know of potential funding avenues.

Healthy vs health-adjusted life expectancy: Why do they differ so much?

A recent CHE study explored the apparent discrepancy between social inequality in disability-free and quality-adjusted life expectancy.

It examines how using binary rather than continuous adjustments for health-related quality of life influences the estimated magnitude of social inequality in lifetime health and explores the implications for equity weighting in distributional cost-effectiveness analysis.
