We organise walks and trips every Sunday to various beautiful locations throughout Yorkshire catering for all abilities and tastes. We organise walks and trips every Sunday to various beautiful locations throughout Yorkshire catering for all abilities and tastes.

-------------------------------------------------
What to Expect:
-------------------------------------------------
Medium walks are g

enerally between 6 and 8 miles (10-13 km) long, and tend to be at a reasonably gentle pace and always include a stop for a pub lunch. Long walks are slightly more challenging and are between 10 and 12 miles (16-19 km) long and don't include a pub lunch but instead stop for a packed lunch along the way. At 16:00 all the groups meet back at the coach and return back to the University, arriving no later than 18:00.

-------------------------------------------------
Costs:
-------------------------------------------------
£12 per walk for Outdoor Soc Members
£14 per walk for non Outdoor Soc Members
£15 for membership for the year! If you're not a member, we will have to ask you for the extra £2 on Sunday.

-------------------------------------------------
What to Bring:
-------------------------------------------------
We run both medium and long walks - if you choose the medium walk, please bring money for a pub lunch, as not all places take card payments, and if you choose to do the long walk, please bring a packed lunch, as there is no guarantee that you'll be able to buy food when we get there. Please wear appropriate clothing for a walk in the Yorkshire countryside! Walking boots are best, but if you don't have any, sturdy trainers or wellies should be fine. Also please avoid wearing jeans, because they get very unpleasant to wear when it rains. As this is Yorkshire, you should always be prepared for rain, no matter HOW sunny it looks, so remember to bring waterproofs or other appropriate wet weather gear.

-------------------------------------------------
Where to Meet:
-------------------------------------------------
We meet near the white benches outside the Roger Kirk Centre in James College at 8.45am. Arrival time back to campus varies depending on where we are walking but we're normally back between 5-6pm.

Our final social secretary for 2026/27: Aiden Turner
Age: 20
Course: maths and computer science

The last of our socials trio, Aiden a new and dedicated member of the committee. You’ll see him every week on socials assisting Issac and Alex to bring you new and interesting socials.

If he is not in a pub, you’ll find him out and about on hikes around York and in the Moores. He loves anything to do with the outdoors, hiking, and drinking.

With him onboard we hope your social schedule will have some new and interesting additions in the coming semester.

Our second social secretary for 2026/27 Alex McNicol.
Age: 19
Degree: History and Politics

Next up for the social secs, it’s Isaac’s friend!

Alex has very kindly agreed to shave some time out of his busy schedule to join our committee this year, and with his unique humour and can-do attitude, it’s a shear delight to have him on board! Despite there being two other social secs, Alex is simply a cut above the rest and was enlisted to keep our socials from getting hairy.

He’s the mane event character at all our socials, so as long as his interest in outdoor Soc doesn’t recede, he’s going to be an invaluable part of our trio this year.

Well done Alex,

Social Secretary for 2026/27 Isaac Goodwin
Age: 20
Degree: History and Politics

They say good things come in threes but I’m yet to be convinced that this applies for our social secs this year… First up in our terrible trio is Isaac!

Isaac ditched Derwent rugby to join our society (if he was actually any good at rugby we’d ask them to take him back) and hasn’t looked back since! He’s the life and soul of our socials and keeps each walk light hearted and fun.

Our gentle giant may have a penchant for trouble (particularly in Flares) but his enthusiasm for bird watching (definitely not in Flares) is just one of many loveable quirks. With Isaac on board, socials this year are almost guaranteed to be lively!

Well done Isaac!

President for 2026/27: Jack Rayment
Age: 21
Course: Engineering

Jack was the perfect candidate for president this year as he loves the outdoors almost as much as he loves chatgpt!

Jack is an incredibly steadfast and dependable character with great organisation. Despite our hike at Gelbert’s grave showing that he has clearly never touched a map in his life, Jack made an incredible kit sec last year and really proved his commitment to this society. The only thing you can’t trust him to know is the weather forecast (turns out AI isn’t the fella to ask for that…).

He’s always up for a challenge, completing the Yorkshire three (two) peaks with the rest of committee earlier this year, as well as being the brains behind our collaboration hike with Lancaster for roses this year!

If his dedication to our society is as strong as his dedication to flares then nothing will get in the way of him having an excellent year as president (except maybe a pheasant).

Treasurer for 2026/27: Immy Downes
Age: 19
Degree: Maths and Finance

Despite being one of our newest members, Immy won the role of treasurer by an absolute landslide at our AGM with one simple sentence: “I love spreadsheets”.

When our resident finance bro takes a break from geeking in the sheets, she can usually be found leading the pack on a long walk planning her upcoming evening at Revs (this girl loves to get her step count in on Sundays).

An incredibly genial and uplifting person, Immy will no doubt keep our finances in tip top shape this year.

Well Done Immy!!

Secretary for 2026/27: Katie-Mae White
Age: 20
Course: Biology

As an avid romantasy fan with a longing for adventure, I’m not quite sure if our society quite lives up to Katie-Mae’s high standards but she’s stuck around long enough to become a SIG so clearly we’re doing alright.

Katie-Mae is an incredibly warm personality and one of the best people to talk to on our hikes (as long as you don’t set her off on a tea tangent). Her struggle to tell apart a real rock from a plastic one (big bouldering fan) hasn’t set her astray just yet and she’s been doing an excellent job co-ordinating and leading hikes with the rest of committee.

Her great time management and attention to detail will make her one of the best bird watching secretaries we’ve had for a long time.

Well done Katie-Mae!

ROSES ARE GREEN!!

It turns out that not every roses result was depressing this year! (makes a change)

The idea that we would compete with Lancaster in a hiking event has been in the works for a long time but in 2026 we finally made it happen (thank you president Jack). However, it seems as though hikers aren’t the most competitive bunch so we decided to compromise and go for a nice stroll instead.

Therefore, committee members from Outdoor Society and LUHC banded together and completed a (rather long) hike around Settle on Saturday 2nd May. It was such a success that we hope to open it up to the rest of the society in the years to come :)
