Prof. Elaine Hui, an Associate Professor of Labor and Employment Relations at Penn State University, USA, and an alumnus of SGPS, gave a talk to our current and incoming students this morning.
Prof. Hui presented insights from her in-depth case study on one prominent Chinese multinational corporation (MNC). This discussion explored the complex relationship between MNCs and labor rights, highlighting how these corporations navigated labor relations in the US. Prof. Hui's research suggested that MNCs utilized various strategies, including adaptation, negotiation, and dictation, to influence labor practices.
The talk provided valuable perspectives for all participants interested in international business and labor rights. We extend our gratitude to Prof. Hui for her valuable sharing!๐Ÿฅณ

Professor Edward Yau, former principal official of the Hong Kong SARGov and Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Social Science in CUHK delivered a wonderful exchange to the students of SGPS on the morning of 15 March (Saturday). The theme of the talk is "US-China Relations: Are We Doomed to Divide and Decouple?" Professor Yau made an important point: "It is not the rise of China that has caused the souring of the US-China relations, but a decline of the US's consensual leadership, although the US remains a de facto and coercive leader of the world today." Prof. Yau vividly illustrated this point with his work experience and extensive reading about the global political economy.

After Prof. Yau's one-hour presentation, students of SGPS raised several meaningful questions relating to the origin of the China-U.S. Trade War and the role and prospects of Hong Kong SAR in Sino-U.S. Relations. Prof Carlos Lo and Mr. Ivan Choy hosted the special session. They thanked Professor Yau for his inspiring sharing and hoped that he would soon have a similar exchange with the faculty and students at SGPS.๐ŸŽ‰

Thanks to the part-time students of GPGC and the Office of Hon Chan Chun-ying, students from GPGC and MPUP visited the Legislative Council on 17 February (Monday) under the guidance of Professor Zhan Jing. On the day of the visit, led by Hon Chan Chun-ying and the docent, the teachers and students visited the Council Chamber, the History Gallery, the Media Centre, etc., and took a group photo with Mr. Chan. During the more than one-hour activity, the docents introduced the history and current situation of the Legislative Council to the students with his rich knowledge and experience, and Mr. Chan also had a cordial exchange with the students on the daily work of the members. The visit broadened the students' horizons and enhanced their understanding of Hong Kong's political and social system.

On the afternoon of September 26, Prof. Vivian Zhan Jing, Director of the GPGC Programme, was invited by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Chinese University of Hong Kong๏ผˆShenzhen๏ผ‰to give a lecture on her 2022 book China's Contained Resource Curse: How Minerals Shape State-Capital- Labor Relations.๐Ÿ“šโ›ฐ๏ธ

Professor Zhan analyzed the heterogeneous impact of mineral resources on countries, capital, and labor from a sub-national perspective through detailed qualitative and quantitative data. The study finds that mineral resources can promote local economic development and capital accumulation but inhibit labor welfare and human capital development. Local governments must maintain a balance between capital and labor to maintain economic development and social stability. Her book shows the effective measures of the Chinese government to curb the resource curse and points out the shortcomings of China's development situation, which has important policy implications for other resource-rich countries and regions.

At the end of the academic report, Prof. Zhan also had an active exchange with dozens of teachers and students, and patiently and meticulously answered questions about the reform of China's financial system and the relationship between the central and local governments.
